Yahoo mail??

#1 Post by themanintheseersuckersuit » Fri Nov 14, 2008 8:46 am

Is something going on with yahoo mail?

I got this message from my mail server

"Sorry, I couldn't find any host named yahoo.com"
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Call the plumber!

I get those viruses pretending to be my mail server with undelivered mail. Don't click on any attachments...

My Yahoo mail still works.

Not that I've gotten an e-mail to that address in the last two years or so...

How to you not get tons of spam to your Yahoo address? Many spammers use alphabet attacks. I get about 50 spam messages a day.

I don't know. Is my use of a 0 in place of a O too clever for these attacks?

I heard that some ISP responsible for a huge percentage of US spam got shut down recently? I have noticed a substantial drop in the amount of spam being caught by the filters for my work address.

My old email is getting MUCH less crap sent to it lately! Maybe they shut someone down before the other idiots could get cranked up! I give it about 4 days...

Yes, using a number in the middle of your email address prefix actually will do some good. The spammers assume the numbers come only at the end.

I haven't heard about any ISP being shut down; an ISP wouldn't be liable anyway. There have been some busts of spammers recently though. My spam is down to under 200 a day now.

It was some little company called McColo.

Here's one article about it:

http://www.latimes.com/technology/la-fi ... 6124.story
But this week, the tide turned. The number of unwanted, offensive and misleading e-mails sent across the globe plummeted by about two-thirds, to a mere 60 billion or so a day by Thursday, according to spam filtering companies.
Too bad, as they say, it won't last.

The original story is here:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 00658.html

They aren't an ISP but a hosting company, like GoDaddy. They hosted all sort of illegal services and were shut down for that, not spam. Since spam can be traced back to the originating system - unless there is a spambot at work (and there apparently was) - spam could have been traced back to McColo and they would have been disconnected. The loss of spam was just a side effect in other words.
