Lyrically Speaking Day 6 11/12/08

The name of today's game is a single word: Quitcherbitchen.

You knew there had to be one of these games this month as soon as you saw who was Meistering. So quitcherbitchen, and give it a try. Who knows, you might know a couple.

Below are lyrics to songs that have been performed on the Broadway stage. They've also appeared in at least ONE movie, and here's a hint: the name of the musical and the name of the movie are exactly the same. Now, the musical may have come first, and then the movie....or maybe the movie came first....or maybe it was originally a non-musical movie, then a musical, then a musical movie. Who knows? Hopefully you do.

You'll get one point for the correct song title, and one point for the name of the musical/movie. There's no need to give an artist, since that would be cruel in most instances, and it usually differed from stage to screen (or screen to stage, or...). For the record, I believe that #11 is not only the best song on this list, but one of the best songs ever written.

1. I saw your face and I ascended
Out of the commonplace, into the rare
Somewhere in space I hang suspended
Until I know there's a chance that you care

2. Say you love me every waking moment
Turn my head with talk of summertime
Say you need me with you now and always
Promise me that all you say is true

3. Don't throw bouquets at me
Don't please my folks too much
Don't laugh at my jokes too much

4. But I just cannot stand still
'Cause the world keeps spinnin' round and round
And my heart's keeping time to the speed of sound

5. Deutchland is happy and gay!
We're marching to a faster pace
Look out, here comes the master race!

6. If your blonde won't respond when you flatter 'er
Tell her what Tony told Cleopaterer
And if still, to be shocked, she pretends well,
Just remind her that "All's Well That Ends Well"

7. How can I speak of her virtues?
I don't know where to begin
She's clever, she's smart, she reads music
She doesn't smoke or drink gin (like I do)

8. 525,600 minutes, 525,000 moments so dear
525,600 minutes - how do you measure,
Measure a year?

9. You won't believe me,
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you

10. March went out like a lion
Awakin' up the water in the bay
Then April cried and stepped aside
And along came pretty little May!

11. All around the cathedral, the saints and apostles
Look down as she sells her wares
Although you can't see it, you know they are smiling
Each time someone shows that he cares
Though her words are simple and few
Listen, listen, she's calling to you

12. I asked him to say what had happened
How it all began
I asked again, he never said a word
As if he hadn't heard
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

Walt Disney's
favorites as well. Here is a (reasonbly close) transcript.
Transcript:
(Dick Sherman begins) The one song in Mary Poppins that became the most near and dear to our hearts was "Feed the Birds (Tuppence a Bag)". It was one of the first songs we wrote, and it was directly inspired out of the story Mrs. Travers created, and it was hardly changed at all. Of all the songs we wrote, this was kind of taken in one... Another one of the wonderful people that was preserved on that film -- she was very old at that point-- was the Bird Lady, a wonderful character actress, Jane Darwell. She was Ma Joad in the Grapes of Wrath. Jane Darwell had been retired for twenty years by that time. And we were thinking, who would be the right character actress? One day in a discussion, Walt said, "I know the perfect person. I think what we should do is, really, send her a script and treat her like the star she should be treated as." And they send a script to Jane Darwell at the Actor's Home. She cried. She was so thrilled. And of course they sent cars for her. It was just wonderful. She was on that set. And she didn't have much to do, except just be herself, and say, "Feed the birds. Tuppence a bag." But it seems to have encapsulated what we were trying to do in Mary Poppins, which was to say it doesn't take very much to give that extra dimension, to give that extra love, and tuppence signifies "little", "hardly anything." and "feeding the birds" means giving to the people that need. In this particular case, it was the Banks children. They need their father and mother's attention, their love. They didn't just have to be provided for, they had to be loved and paid attention to. (Bob Sherman interjects) Well, Walt loved this sentiment and he felt it so deeply. And Fridays after work, he'd usually invite us into his office. We'd sit around and talk about things that were going on at the studio, you know, worldly matters. Then he'd look over to Dick [Sherman] and he'd say [in a soft voice] "Play it." (Dick Sherman continues). And I knew what he wanted. Sometimes he wouldn't even say anything, he would just look out the window and get a little misty-eyed. And we'd play it. It was just wonderful because sometimes he could say so much just by a look or by a silence. And we knew what he was saying. After Walt passed away, there were many a Friday afternoon that I'd go over to his office -- while the office was still his and there -- and play it for him.

1. I saw your face and I ascended
Out of the commonplace, into the rare
Somewhere in space I hang suspended
Until I know there's a chance that you care

2. Say you love me every waking moment
Turn my head with talk of summertime
Say you need me with you now and always
Promise me that all you say is true

3. Don't throw bouquets at me
Don't please my folks too much
Don't laugh at my jokes too much

4. But I just cannot stand still
'Cause the world keeps spinnin' round and round
And my heart's keeping time to the speed of sound

5. Deutchland is happy and gay!
We're marching to a faster pace
Look out, here comes the master race!
Springtime For Hitler, the Producers

6. If your blonde won't respond when you flatter 'er
Tell her what Tony told Cleopaterer
And if still, to be shocked, she pretends well,
Just remind her that "All's Well That Ends Well"

7. How can I speak of her virtues?
I don't know where to begin
She's clever, she's smart, she reads music
She doesn't smoke or drink gin (like I do)
If you could see her, Caberet

8. 525,600 minutes, 525,000 moments so dear
525,600 minutes - how do you measure,
Measure a year?
Seasons of Love, Rent

9. You won't believe me,
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
Don't Cry For Me Argentina, Evita

10. March went out like a lion
Awakin' up the water in the bay
Then April cried and stepped aside
And along came pretty little May!

11. All around the cathedral, the saints and apostles
Look down as she sells her wares
Although you can't see it, you know they are smiling
Each time someone shows that he cares
Though her words are simple and few
Listen, listen, she's calling to you
Feed the Birds, Mary Poppins

12. I asked him to say what had happened
How it all began
I asked again, he never said a word
As if he hadn't heard
