Singing on the show

#1 Post by mntetn » Tue Nov 11, 2008 10:11 am

In light of the recent discussion about the contestant who sampled Pink Floyd and was muted:

We have two-a-day shows here this year, the new one plus a rerun.

In one of the reruns last week, Meredith sang the title bar from "We Wear Short Shorts" after the contestant successfully answered the question. It was not censored.

I think the criterion is whether they are willing to pay performance and whatever other rights are involved for it. They must have thought Meredith but not the Pink Flloyd sampler worthy. We were told in no uncertain terms not to sing except for Rod the karaoke artist, who was told he could sing if Meredith asked him to.

Same here, they told us not to sing because if we did they had to edit it out or pay royalties.

I agree, they probably were okay with Meredith doing it. Maybe it was even planned.

Wasn't "Who Wears Short Shorts?" just an advertising jingle?

I don't think most companies, Nair included, would balk at free advertising.

No, "Short Shorts" was a #3 hit for the Royal Teens in 1958. It really doesn't have much of a melody. It's more of a spoken chant. If Meredith sang the title line, that's only four notes, the last three of which are the same, which may not be enough of a snippet to require royalty payments. If Meredith changed any of the notes in the "melody," that might also have avoided the problem.

So (delving back into ancient history), the BB chick who sang "Everything's Coming Up Regis"- they didn't have to pay any royalties because it was a parody?

Or did they?

When I answered a question about Fiddler on the Roof, Meredith asked if I could sing anything from the show. I responded with a quick "If I were a rich woman . . . ". That was left in.

I believe that was Amy Turner, for whom I warmed up the hot seat in early 2001. Maybe the prime time show had more of a budget to pay royalties. They seem to be treating $250K as the new $1M.

Yes it was Amy, and thus why IHS9 went into a tizzy when mntetn posted this thread......
