Lyrically Speaking - Day 1 11/7/08

#1 Post by KillerTomato » Fri Nov 07, 2008 5:10 am

Welcome to LYRICALLY SPEAKING Day 1

Today's game is a new concept for me running LS. I'm not going to give you any hints as to what connects one song to another (other than to say that there IS a connection), but you'll likely be able to figure it out. For each of the lyrics below, please supply the artist and song title (1 point each). You can use an obscure artist for a cover version (I won't take off for the Alvin and the Chipmunks version of "White Christmas" for instance), but I'd really appreciate it if you could use the best-known artist you can think of...it'll just make scoring easier. But again, knock yourself out.

The usual rules of games apply: No outside sources, spoilerize your answers, yadda yadda. The game will remain open until noon Saturday, 11/8/08.

This month or so of games will begin with one of my all-time favorite rock and roll songs. I hope you enjoy it. And remember, if you can't be right, be funny...since I'll give out a bonus point or two for the one or two funniest answers each day.

1. But tonight we'll be free
All the promises will be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away

2. Oh, oh, the highway runs so clear
Oh, oh, the river from there to here
I'll tell you a story from the heart and from the bone
And I will tell you everything on, oh

3. Images of sorrow, pictures of delight
Things that go to make up a life
Endless days of summer, lonely nights of gloom
Waiting for the morning light
Scenes of unimportance, photos in a frame
Things that go to make up a life

4. Do you remember when we met?
That's the day I knew you were my pet
I wanna tell you just how much I love you

5. Someone to love
Somebody new
Someone to love
Someone like you

6. First off, let me say congratulations
Heard that you just had a baby girl
If she looks anything like her mother
She's the prettiest thing in the world

7. So many nights, I sit by my window
Waiting for someone to sing me his song

8. From Mozambique to those Memphis nights
The Khyber Pass to Vancouver lights
Knock me down, get back up again
You're in my blood, I'm not a lonely man

9. Well, another day, another dollar
After I've sang and hollered
Oh, it's my way of living
And I can't change a thing

10. Funny thing, but you can sing it with a cry in your voice
And before you know it, start to feeling good
You simply got no choice
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

7. So many nights, I sit by my window
Waiting for someone to sing me his song

8. From Mozambique to those Memphis nights
The Khyber Pass to Vancouver lights
Knock me down, get back up again
You're in my blood, I'm not a lonely man

9. Well, another day, another dollar
After I've sang and hollered
Oh, it's my way of living
And I can't change a thing

10. Funny thing, but you can sing it with a cry in your voice
And before you know it, start to feeling good
You simply got no choice

Spoiler
You know I have reached beyond pathetic when I can't get the song which was the Beatles' 1st hit in England, the song for which Delbert McClinton taught John Lennon some more licks on the harmonica than he already knew (& teaching harmonica is, well, hard, because you can't exactly see inside somebody's mouth; not back then anyway!!!!).
Its been a very tough year (this one "started" in May) & it ain't getting any easier

Of all the boys you sent away

3. Images of sorrow, pictures of delight
Things that go to make up a life
