Fifth Grader thread

#1 Post by MarleysGh0st » Mon Oct 27, 2008 9:21 am

We talked a little about this on Saturday, but there has to be an official thread so that someone can issue the standard expression of disbelief.

First contestant was the 18-year-old mayor of Muskogee, OK. He trusted Jonathan when he decided to use the Copy on the $100K question, 5th Grade Astronomy:
What's the name of the first American woman to travel into outer space?
Jonathan's answer was "May Jane" and the mayor dropped to $25K.

(IMHO, this was really a U.S. History question, not Astronomy. But I wonder who May Jane is?)

The second contestant was a couple, a Prom King and Queen from somewhere in Kansas. They said they weren't a "couple", though, just friends.

They decided to walk away with $100K, after seeing the 4th Grade Ancient History question:
The city of Cuzco in Peru was the capital of what ancient South American empire?
They didn't reveal Bryce's answer on this, but Jeff did tell them that he would not have been able to save them, if they had taken a guess.

And I've got a bone to pick with this category, too. Would Ferdinand and Isabella be considered "Ancient History" now? IIRC, the Inca empire was not old at all, when it fell to Pizarro and his band of conquistadors.

A full transcript of the questions is available from the 5th Grader message board.

To most 4th graders, Bill Clinton is ancient history. It's all a matter of perspective.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

TPTB don't have to encourage the young whippersnappers with that short-sighted perspective!

Harrumph!

I thought perhaps Jonathan was thinking of Mae Jimeson, the first African-American woman in space.

For a fifth-grader, anything past 1990 is "ancient history"! :D

Oh, and "I can't believe you're still watching that show." (Or that I am, either.)

Thanks, ear!

I was beginning to think that nobody would say it and the thread would be wasted!
