New computer up and running

#1 Post by gsabc » Sat Oct 25, 2008 4:34 pm

Sort of. Took forever to move things around. Still need to download some programs. Also need to transfer files, which is not so easy as Vista wants you to believe. Back tomorrow, I hope.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Well, it's running, anyway. I think I've downloaded just about all the programs I need, but I'm having trouble transferring files. Windows Easy Transfer isn't. First it wouldn't recognize the network I created by linking the two computers. Now it won't recognize the external hard drive I'm trying to use to do a three-way transfer (old computer to hard drive, hard drive to new computer). Right now I'm defragmenting the HD (though it doesn't really need it) in the hopes that it'll appear better to the software. That's slow, for whatever reason. The annoyance is that all my bookmarks are sitting on the old critter. I may search for the bookmarks folder and just transfer that via flash drive for now.

I think it's a conspiracy so I have to go out and buy one of their Easy Transfer cables. Like MS needs more of my money. Circuit City does, however, so I may end up going there tomorrow.

Alfred, so named because of its nearly all-black Batcave look, is lightning fast. I should go over to Sploofus and see if I can pick up some time bonuses. And the 22" flatscreen monitor is way huge. It also has two USB ports right on the monitor. That has proven useful, because the console is too big for our computer desk cabinet. I had to put it on the floor, and the printer cable and webcam cable won't reach. So I've just plugged them into the monitor. Very cool. Vista will take some getting used to, as will the wireless keyboard which has a very different tactile feedback from the previous one.

I have no idea why you're having problems with Easy Transfer. I've used it many times both through a network and with an external drive.

Does Vista recognise your external drive?

That seems to be the problem. I get an error message saying "Problem with the selected media"

In looking at the Easy Transfer cables, it appears that none of them are very good. One review did give me a hint about changing connections among the USB ports and finally getting things to work, so I may try that. Either that, or I spend tomorrow evening wasting CDs.

On the plus side, I figured out how to move my bookmarks over. My browser is back in business.

The cables are good, but the process is snow.

I'd figure out why your external drive isn't being recognized then use it.
