Just desserts (political)
Michele Bachmann (R MN), who called for the press to investigate which members of Congress were pro-American and which were anti-American, had been romping to an easy re-election against a more or less unknown opponent. No longer. Her opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg was stunned by a flood of more than a million dollars in campaign donations in the day or so following Bachmann's remarks.
A poll of the district is now out. Bachmann is now trailing by 3 points, and the National Republican Congressional Committee (to its credit) has pulled its financial support from her. To my mind, this is what it means to take our country back.
In other news, an internal poll leaked to conservative commentator Michelle Malkin has John Murtha (D PA) (who said that Western Pennsylvania has a lot of racists and rednecks) down by 13 points in his district. A contemporaneous public poll has Murtha up, but only by 4 points. --Bob

Both of these folks are prime examples of what's wrong with our government today.
They're so insulated they think they can say whatever they want.
Let's hope they BOTH pay the consequences.

I think Tailgunner Michelle is a goner.Jeemie wrote:Both of these folks are prime examples of what's wrong with our government today.

I suspect Murtha might squeak by, however. It could even be with a recount because it will be so close.
If it had happened earlier in the election cycle, when the NRCC had a skooch more cash, I think Murtha would be gone, too. But, the NRCC is pulling out of races like Congresswoman Bachman's (and Phil English in Erie - Tom Ridge's old seat) to put resources into holding some seats.
They never anticipated such a golden opportunity for a pickup.

I'm surprised they didn't go harder after Murtha, who called the Marines at Haditha guilty before they had ever been tried.
No matter how much people may not like Bush, I'd have to believe no one likes our soldiers being crapped on unfairly.
As for Bachman, she's probably gone because she's in Minnesota.
But you'd be surprised at how many defenders she has...I've seen many message boards where she's been called a "patriot".

In a semi-related story, Congressman Tim Mahoney, who won Mark Foley's seat and is probably the single most vulnerable Democrat in the country, who got himself involved in his own messy sex scandal.... now his wife has filed for divorce (surprise, surprise). Democrats are going to pick up a number of additional seats in Congress, but this one will probably be the first one they have lost in quite a while.

When I was on the Hill, I worked with a woman who is now Michelle Bachmann's Chief of Staff (or maybe she's the Leg. Director, but I think it's CoS). I wonder if she's firing up the ol' resume'....
