Red Ribbon Week

#1 Post by PlacentiaSoccerMom » Thu Oct 23, 2008 9:09 pm

This week is Red Ribbon Week at Emma's school. Apparently they were chosen to have some fancy shindig by the Department of Justice. I just got a message stating that a nationally known figure will be at the school tomorrow and that no cell phones will be allowed. Emma says that the rumor going around her school is that Michael Jackson is coming and he will be handcuffed to prevent him from going after the boys.

Maybe it will be a national politician.

How do they monitor for no cell phones? They're so small these
days you could hide one easily.

Cell phones even make airport security. Maybe they don't want a region-wide blast about the national figure.

What does the Red Ribbon stand for again?

Will there be trouble if a student wears any of the many other ribbons that stand for something?

Looks like they are coming to a school without lockers to talk about drugs.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Probably wouldn't be a good day to wear your "Bong Hits for Jesus" T-shirt.

They apparently don't apply there, either.

But I'm curious about this "no cell phone" security ruling. There was a thread just the other day discussing campaign rallies and the cell phone photos taken there. This event will be higher security than those?

Is Emma going to meet POTUS today?

Here's the problem. I have to go to a District meeting starting at 3:00 today, because I am on a committee that is redrawing high school boundaries. Emma's school gets out at 3:30. Emma is walking to her friend's house and then she is calling Maddie to come pick her up and they will walk to Maddie's school and Emma will stay at Maddie's Comedy Sportz practice until my meeting is finished.

Since Emma has no locker, she can't stow her cell phone. She needs to have the phone with her today because she has to meet up with Maddie. She isn't going to use it during the event, but she needs to have it with her today for safety reasons.

Ah, makes sense. The way it was posted about the phone, I thought perhaps she was in a snit about the lunch thing, so had decided to flaut the rules too.

Didn't sound like Emma.

Because her friend's house does not have a phone to call Maddie?

She is not calling Maddie from her friend's house. Her friend's grandma is on hospice and I didn't want to inconvenience the family.

I guess that I was confused by the statement that she was walking to a friend's house and then calling Maddie to pick her up.

Why do you say that? Has ES been running up the minutes to the 1 (900) SQUIREL number again?
Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!

I dropped Emma off at school and they had the teacher's parking lot blocked off with security patrolling the front of the school.

I went around to the back of the school, where the public park is and a helicopter was landing on the school field. I saw people exit the helicopter wearing military fatigues. An ambulance and fire truck were already parked on the field. After the bell rang, kids started coming out wearing red anti-drug shirts. (I can only imagine Emma's comments when her class was given their shirts because she finds special event t-shirts to be a huge waste of money. From what I understand, Emma's got a $13,000 grand to put on today's shindig.) Nobody was carrying backpacks, so I assume they locked them up in the classrooms.

Zap and I hung out with some other parents for a bit. Security was patrolling the perimeter of the field, glaring at the parents, though they smiled at me when they saw my dog.

Seriously, has there been any reports establishing where POTUS is today? Or VPOTUS? Surely, the governator doesn't travel with security like this?

I can't wait for you to relay Emma's report when she gets home!
