Orson Scott Card on Journalistic Integrity

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Tue Oct 21, 2008 8:23 am

Noted Sci Fi writer Orson Scott Card, a Democrat, talks about journalistic integrity, or the lack thereof, in reporting this Presidential election.

Umm...SSS...if you're going to do a post of a lack of journalistic integrity...try not to use as an example someone who is only repeating talking points.

The entire "Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac caused the entire financial crisis, aided by the Dems, while the GOP tried to stop them" has been debated ad nauseum and been completely debunked.

I like to pick up the local right-wing weekly, which is amusing in its way. I'm sure I amuse them in the same way.

They run a column by Card sometimes, but I can't get through any of them.

I may read this piece later, but I tend to be irritated by potshots at journalists or the generic "the media". Few such shots begin with, "I realize most news outlets are doing a good job, but here is a bad one I want to point out..." The shots just begin with blanket accusations against the entire field, without separating print from TV from bloggers (who are not necessarily journalists by definition) and from whatever else is out there.

Some readers do not want to pay for subscriptions anymore but they still want as in-depth and thorough stories online for free as they used to get for pay. Unsustainable model.

Orson Scott Card may be a registered Democrat, I don't know, but his mindset, as a devout Mormon, would certainly seem to fit better with the Republican Party.

Where did you get the information that he is a Democrat?

From the article itself.

Isn't that much like accepting that the Bible is the Word of God because it says so itself?

Here's the bullet points called "Links of interest" on Orson's opinion website, at www.ornery.org:
(OSC stands for Orson Scott Card, of course. It takes a big person to turn himself into a TLA)

OA Links of Interest
• OSC says: Don't just take my word about the state of scientific evidence on same-sex "marriage."
• OSC asks: Why do we allow them to teach global warming to our children in science class? As Bret Stephens points out, it's really religion
• Bush never lied to us about Iraq
• Environmentalists Pick Up Where Communists Left Off
• Moral Choices
• FOX NEWS: 21 Questions Answered About Mormon Faith
• Many people have asked OSC where they can get the facts behind the rhetoric about the war. A good starting place is: "Who Is Lying About Iraq?" by Norman Podhoretz, who takes on the "Bush Lied, People Died" slogan.

Now, I like OSC's writing. But I don't think even the big boys at GOP headquarters would describe the author of the above-referenced articles as a Democrat. As Repubs have RINOs, Dems have DINOs. My personal opinion is that Card has some bigass logs to remove from his own eye, if he claims to be a Democrat and lectures the press on integrity. This isn't even like Charley Reese, who has always been a Dixiecrat/Libertarian/Isolationist. This is just calling yourself something so you can then take opposing positions to everything in the party's platform, and then pat yourself on the back for your intellectual courage. At least his website is appropriately named.

You're missing the point, Mikey.

SSS has embraced the philosophy of "The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend". Therefore, he'll wholehearted read (and quote to us) all sorts of sources that he'd normally take issue with.
