October is the perfect time of year to go. We stayed right in downtown Napa at the Napa River Inn. It was a lovely room that included your breakfast delivered to the room every day.

If you didn't want them to bring it your room, you could go next door to Sweetie Pies and use a voucher to get your breakfast. That shop is a dangerous place to enter. I've never seen such a variety of great breakfast foods. It included a quiche that was to die for. It's too bad I'm not really a breakfast person, but I nibbled on some of the choices including the Danish pastries. :)

Let's make it a political thread, this is too hard to resist. A giant squirrel.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

We had lunch on Friday at Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen. A quaint setting with fabulous food. We had an oyster appetizer that had spinach and a tequila infused parmesan cheese topping. It was the best oyster dish I have ever had.

I also had a salad with avocado and papaya that was excellent as well. Here's her website if you want to take a peek:

I'll aid and abet later if you're still up. No politics, I promise!

Since going to Napa is all about food and wine, that's what you'll be hearing about. Well, the food part, as I'm not really a wine drinker.

Dinner was at La Toque, in the new Westin Hotel. Service was unbelievable. They start out by giving everyone a hot wash cloth. (I don't think it was because we looked like we needed it - we cleaned up nicely for this dinner. :) ) The sommelier was quite knowledgeable and told us all about each wine as it was served. You could order dinner with a wine pairing (I think it added $55 to the price, but I guess that's not that bad considering that's 3 glasses of wine.

The men finished off the meal with a chamomile infused grappa. They really liked it and I have been trying to find it to purchase for the past couple of days. The only place I've found so far is Wally's in LA, so I may have to enlist one of my LA bored buddies to buy it for me and have it sent here. Alabama is one of the states that doesn't allow retailers to ship without jumping through hoops of some kind.

Read any good books lately?

I just finished Rachel and Leah, by Orson Scott Card.

Quite disturbing, but good. Rather on par with The Red Tent

I love dinners with wine pairings. It allows us to try wines that we ordinarily wouldn't try. Both the Napa Rose and The Hobbit have wine pairings with their meals.

That's it! If you can find it, you and I can talk later if you don't mind. The price I saw was in the high $70's.

You can tell that's a fake squirrel. We don't get involved in politics! We do like to show up at rallies and throw nuts though....

Woohoo! 500 posts! I think I am the most prodigious squirrel in Bored history.....
Squirrels are the architects of forests, the planters of trees, nature's own acrobats and show a zest for life that can inspire us. Every day should be National Squirrel Appreciation Day!

--squirrelmama (10/3/07)

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.

Sprots must have been depressed after tonight's game and
gone to bed early. I didn't get to see the game, but I was sure
surprised when I saw the score.

I did have something good happen today. I found a diamond bracelet
I thought I had lost. I knew when I had it last, which was here at home. I just couldn't
find it in all my usual places. I was also babysitting Chapman at the time, so God only
knows what I might have done with it. I've been looking for it for a good month. I was
beginning to think I may have thrown it away by mistake.

I was getting something out of my dresser this morning and there it was! It wasn't in
a place it was supposed to be. I think I may have had it in my hand when I put the
clean clothes up. Anyway, I'm quite thankful I found it and will certainly be more careful
with it from now on.

OK, I backed up on this thread and see I did miss your post about books. Sorry, that was about the time one of my friends dropped by and didn't leave until after 9:30!

I am reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. It's a very big book, but I am having trouble finding a stopping place. I'm enjoying it a lot.

I have that problem too. I get into a good book, and next thing I know, the alarm is going off LOL.

Strangely enough, Big J also reads like a demon. Something in the genetics?
