That's what racists do when they go after a black candidate. They aren't subtle about it at all, and it doesn't require an entire opinion column to explain to the public just what might be wrong about the ad. This was an emailer sent to a Republican women's club of about 200 members and was someone's idea of a "joke." I might add that it's not as disgusting as some of the anti-Palin jokes and emails that are circulating on Obama sites and are considered highly funny. Or the Palin tee shirt that shows up on Obama's own web page.
It also seems as if the Republicans state apparatus is trying to distance itself from the ad. Note there is rarely any similar attempt at apology from Obama's crowd.Warren (a member of the club) forwarded an electronic version of the newsletter to the California Republican Party headquarters, where officials also were outraged Wednesday and denounced the illustration.
Mark Kirk, a spokesman for the San Bernardino County GOP chairman, said he expects Chairman Gary Ovitt to also have a talk with Fedele (the woman who wrote the newsletter) and to attend the group's local meeting next week to discuss the issue with members, although the county GOP has no formal oversight role over the club. Kirk said these kinds of depictions hurt the party's ongoing efforts to reach out to minorities.
"It's very damaging and we're going to take steps to correct this," Kirk said. "Unfortunately, I don't know what you do to correct ignorance like this, but we will do what we can."
The Republicans are conscious of the race issue and don't want to give Obama any legitimate ammunition to use against them.
