Hooray!

#1 Post by PlacentiaSoccerMom » Sat Oct 18, 2008 6:15 pm

Maddie's Quiz Bowl team won their tournament 9-1 and qualified for the National Championships in Chicago.

I didn't get to see Maddie play because I took care of the "B" team for the coach.

THey got their butts kicked at the last tournament at UCLA, so it was a particularly sweet victory.

Congratulations! She must be very proud of her accomplishments. I know her parents are. --Bob

Huzzah!

Now on to a great experience in Chicago that doesn't include an emotionally unstable roommate for Maddie, this year! :)

Yes, you told us. That's why I'm sure this year will be a great experience for Maddie! :)

Congrats! Did she end up going to High School in your local town or did she go to Huntington Beach or elsewhere? :D

Hooray for Maddie and for her team.

I think she probably made a bigger difference here than she would have as Juliet.

I think so too.

It's just difficult for her to realize that she can't do all of the things that she wants to do because of time contraints. (She needs a time turner like Hermione Granger.)

Congratulations to Maddie and the team! Is she still one of the younger members? When is the Chicago competition? I predict a large-size trophy.

We are just beginning our middle-school competitive season, and I'm starting with a nearly new team. Last year we had 12 8th-graders and 3 6th-graders. NO 7th-graders even tried out. My 3 "babies" came back this year as 7s, and I have rookie 8s. Since much of the material comes from the 8th grade curriculum, I'll have kids who know the material but aren't sure about buzzing, waiting for names to be called, etc. Should be an interesting year.

The Chicago competition is at the end of May.

Her team consists of two seniors and two sophmores. Another senior is their sub, but she hasn't been playing because she has Leukemia and got a bone marrow transplant yesterday.

There are a lot of "newbies" on Maddie's B team and it's interesting watching them learn how to play. All it takes is a lot of practice.

Congtrats to all involved! That's terrific.

And -- Chicago in May! -- the lilacs will be blooming everywhere!!! Promise you'll find a bush and see how amazing they smell. The ones they sell here in Ca. have no fragrance. Something to do with our climate without enough frosts; they can't grow naturally here so they maybe they grow them in greenhouses, or truck them in, I don't know but they just aren't the same. :)

Congrats to Maddie's team!
7 months seems a long time between qualifying and the finals. Are these Quiz Bowl people taking their cues from the politicians?

Financially it's good that they qualified early, because we can get reservations now. I believe that last year the team didn't qualify until February or March and airfare was expensive.

The drawback about qualifying early is that some of the kids on the team might not work as hard to get into top form before Nationals.
