QOD Friday-week2

#1 Post by ulysses5019 » Fri Oct 17, 2008 7:26 am

Today's question is a bonus question. The topic is Man of the Year. I will ask the question and you can bid either 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 points. If you get the right you will receive that point value. If you miss it you will lose half the points you bid. I will update the standings on Sunday.

Name the politician who was named Time Magazine's Man of the Year in 1930. He was one of two politicians to be named runner-up to Albert Einstein as Person of the Century in 1999.

The answer to Thursday's question was Breakfast at Tiffanys.
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

Moderate confidence only:
Spoiler
6 points wagered

Mohandas Gandhi

Was tempted to go with Hitler, but I thought he was Time's Man o' the Year a bit later than that.

Let's try 8 points since I have a good idea on this one. After all, this is about a fellow "Person of the Year". :D

Name the politician who was named Time Magazine's Man of the Year in 1930. He was one of two politicians to be named runner-up to Albert Einstein as Person of the Century in 1999. -- 1930 narrows it down quite a bit. It's not
Spoiler
Churchill
or
Spoiler
F.D.R.
cuz they came later. So that leaves
Spoiler
Mohandas Gandhi
.
Spoiler
Gandhi
is my final answer.

Wager: 10 points

Answer:
Spoiler
1930 is surely too early for Hitler, Stalin, or FDR. Runner-up for man of the century means it must be Gandhi. Mohandas K. Gandhi, final answer.

All in 10 pts (No guts, no glory, but in my case it probably will end up being guts with no glory)

Don't know who it was in 1930 but I believe FDR and Ghandi were the runner up selections because Hitler was deemed too controversial. Seems too early for FDR and 1930 was about at the height of the Indian independence movement so I will guess Ghandi.

I will wager 8 points

I looked at Skoop's response and noticed I was supposed to have made a wager. I've done so badly this week that I've got to go for 10.

Insert pithy, snarky comment here
Name the politician who was named Time Magazine's Man of the Year in 1930. He was one of two politicians to be named runner-up to Albert Einstein as Person of the Century in 1999.

If I'm right, it's not the best use of the word "politician." "Political figure" would work better, but it must be Mohandas K. Gandhi. Too early for Hitler, too early for FDR. Too much of an honor for Hoover. Make it for 10 points.
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

I am thinking about this very hard. I wanted to say Mr. Franklin or Mr. Adolf, because they both had dogs, but I don't think the timing is right for them. I did read up on that Salt Tax thing in India after it was a question on the Millionaire show, and I think that happened in 1930, so I will guess Mr. Mohandas Gandhi, even if he didn't have a dog, If he'd had one, he could have taken it on nice, long walks when he did his marches.

I'm not positive if that's right, but I will make this for 10 points, because even if I'm wrong, I wouldn't go into the hole for the week.
