RIP Tom Tresh

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Thu Oct 16, 2008 3:23 pm

Another Yankee from my youth is gone. Tresh was 1962 AL Rookie of the Year and played in the majors from 1962 to 1970, mostly with the Yankees. He replaced Tony Kubek at shortstop when Kubek went into the Army and later played outfield.

Age 71.

There was a lot of talk about Tresh on WFAN today, many fans recalling that he was a really nice guy who was always willing to sign an autograph.

I don't remember it, but when I was a kid we went to Bat Day, I've been told that I was very disappointed that I got a Tom Tresh bat instead of a Mickey Mantle bat.

I'm going to Yankee Stadium tomorrow for the stadium tour, I'm sure that there will be some talk about Tresh.

Son of Mike Tresh, also MLB.

In that era sons of athletes were NOT expected to follow in their father's footsteps but to do upscale work like being a lawyer or dentist or having a PhD, work which didn't make you famous but got remunerated more fairly. Tom Tresh was an exception to that rule.

He was a rookie with NYY in 1962 along with Phil LInz and Tresh kept the SS job waiting for Tony Kubek to come back from his reserve stint. Jim Bouton also came along that year.
