Outnumbered

#1 Post by Sir_Galahad » Mon Oct 13, 2008 11:30 am

Based on my own little informal, silent survey, here is how I see our Bored on election day. These are my assumptions based on the posts I have read by various Bored members in the various threads regarding the election. They are, by no means, scientific and I did not poll anyone.

McCain - 13
Obama - 40

Talk about a stacked deck!

Maybe that's why I'm so vocal here on political issues. Believe it or not, I'm not normally that vocal, preferring instead to let others talk. But there were so few people here speaking out for conservatives that I felt I had to jump in.

I believe that will be a very large straw come Election Day.

I'd like to know how you came up with your assumptions. Granted, I don't read many of the political threads and I usually end up bored (sometimes before I get through the first post of pasted stuff) so I don't read the whole thing, but I can only think of maybe 6-8 people who routinely post enough stuff re: the actual candidates that you can pretty much be certain of their vote.

In fact, going in my head here, I can only come up with maybe a dozen or so that I could be relatively sure of which way they'd go. Figuring out 53 of them seems a bit difficult.

Then again, I'd be hard pressed to come up with 53 board members at all (if I didn't get to count Merry Men, ha!), so maybe I just don't pay attention to much outside that to which I care to pay said attention.
We, the HK Brigade, do hereby salute you, Marley, for your steadfast devotion to ontopicosity. Well done, sir!

There was a poll question out there one day not that long ago, I'm wondering if that helped figure out a lot of the numbers?

I'm shocked that eight years of nasty political bickering hasn't changed any minds. Shouldn't we have reached a consensus by now?

I think that one consensus is that Bush will probably do down as one of our worst presidents. One of the few good things that came from is presidency is Justice Roberts.

I don't know that McCain can separate himself from Bush. And, in my mind, I don't know that he would if elected. That is a concern to me.

I do know, however, that Obama is far removed from Bush and that's what many voters are basing their vote on. But, his ideology is practically 180 degrees from my own. And, I have to count on the fact that once voters get to the point of pulling that lever, they will think long and hard as to what an Obama presidency will produce.

I took a straw poll of my 120+ whatever I have now Merry Men, and the results were 66 for Obama, 44 for McCain, 11 undecided, 2 for Stockdale, and National Apathy Party told me to go get myself screwed.....

In the poll I posted a couple of weeks ago, here were the results:

61 participants

Obama - 35
McCain - 18
Somebody Else - 1
Undecided - 3
Not Voting - 4

Pretty close to your estimation. The poll definitely backed up my hypothesis about the political nature of the bored. This year, I suspect the country will be more in line with this thinking than in previous years.

Good luck with that. The general populace can't think that far ahead. All they know is that the current system isn't working, so let's change it. Since their only choices appear to be major change vs. little or no change (on the major issues affecting their lives), that's how they'll vote. What happens after that is why we have periodic elections and don't just anoint/appoint our leaders for life.

My hugely unscientific poll of my four MM produced the following results: 2 support Obama, 1 supports McCain, and 1 told me that my poll wasn't worth a bucket of warm piss.

Exactly what is the value of a warm bucket of piss and how does it compare to a cold one? Is it worth more or less? Is that fact that it is warm means it is fresher and therefore of greater value? What if someone takes a several day old bucket of piss and reheats it - does the value increase or decrease?

Finally why would a warm bucket of spit be more socially acceptable? Wouldn't that require a large number of people spitting into the bucket at once since if it was produced by a single person I would think it would cool considerably before one could get a fairly decent amount of fluid into it.

Remember on a scale from 1 to 10 - urinate!

Another straw I have to grasp is this. A recent poll (I forget which one) showed that nearly 60 percent of Americans consider themselves either moderately conservative or pure conservative. Why they would consider voting for Obama if they are politically literate is beyond me. And, how this contrasts with what the current election polls state confuses me. So, the four straws I am holding are:

1 - The above conundrum. I just don't believe that mainstream America is ready to elect far left liberal president.
2 - The fact that Obama show be way ahead in the polls, but isn't. This tells me that there are still a lot of undecideds out there considering.
3 - The Bradley Effect
4 - Kerry was ahead by 10-11 points at this point in 2004 and look what happened to him.

I think that if McCain shows just an ounce of leadership in the coming weeks, he will win.

What do you mean? All of the bored Dems and all of Obama's rhetoric have changed my mind. I am definately not voting for Bush again this election.

I can't remember where it was, and it was several years ago at least, but I think I read somewhere about how most people considered themselves at least somewhat conservative, but if you polled them on most issues they took the side of the light and the good.

3 - The Bradley Effect
There are a lot of good reasons to believe there isn't a Bradley effect in this day and age. Deukmejian(sp?)'s campaign manager wrote an article on RCP the other day about how, in the election for which the Bradley effect was named, there was no Bradley effect.
4 - Kerry was ahead by 10-11 points at this point in 2004 and look what happened to him.
Kerry was nowhere near ahead by 10-11 points at this point in 2004. See this

Plus, Kerry didn't have 350+ electoral votes in his polling column. Not on October 14, 2004. Not ever.
