New styles for the Bored

#1 Post by tubadave » Sat Oct 11, 2008 6:16 am

Since the upgrade, the Bored has defaulted to the "prosilver" style, and I previously detailed for you all how to switch over to the "subsilver2" style, which makes the Bored look a lot more like it did before the upgrade.

Variety is the spice of life, they say, and so now it's time to spice things up a bit.

There are now a dozen new styles to choose from (for a total of 14.) Simply find your User Control Panel and go to Board Preferences. When you get there, Edit Global Settings should already be selected. The drop-down menu next to "My board style" is where the list is located.

I certainly don't think these are the 14 best looks out there, but I included these to try and show a range of different options. Some are definitely better than others, but I don't expect everyone to share my tastes. I'm personally a fan of "Getaway" and am using the "Getaway Blue" variation right now.

There is a site where all of these styles are located: http://www.phpbb3styles.net/db/ Some of them are pretty far out, but there are some more interesting ones in there. If you see one you can't live without, email/PM me (or post in the Suggestion Box, so I can be sure to see it) and let me know, and I'll download/install it for you.

With certain styles (Getaway, prosilver, subsilver2 and others) it's also possible to tweak the color scheme a bit.....Getaway Blue wasn't actually available on that website, but was instead a result of a modification I made to the original Getaway style. If you like a particular style, but wish the colors were a bit different, I might be able to adjust it for you.

Enjoy, everyone. Let me know if there are problems, questions, suggestions, etc.

NOTE: I will be gone pretty much all day today (Saturday). I won't see questions or requests until this evening, at the earliest.

NOTE 2: Yes, Christie, I'm working on getting Chat back, in some form or another. It's giving me more trouble than I expected, hence the delay.

Thank you. I am now using AeroGreen, which is a lovely shade of green.

Do you realize what this does to someone as indecisive as I am?

I foresee a lot of wasted hours in my future agonizing over something that doesn't really matter, anyway. Ha!

For right now, I've decided on Getaway Green. I'm not necessarily a green fan, but I like the format in that it's easier to see things like new messages and green is pretty easy on the eyes.

I always like the way the ones like twilight look, but they are harder to read and end up giving me a headache. So function over form must prevail.

I like the choices. I took the Getaway Blue. It's nice and easy to manage, or seems so to me anyway.

I haven't even check out the new styles, yet, but I was delighted to find the "quote" button back on the bottom of the post to which I might wish to reply. I can't tell you how many times I've typed away on a response to the wrong quote. In at least one case where I didn't spot my error, either nobody seems to have noted the difference or rumors about my soundness of mind may be rampant. It's also possible, of course, that nobody ever reads anything I say. I can live with that.

I'm mainly playing Devil's advocate here, but must we relearn the lessons of the Tower of Babel? Do we really want a fragmented membership, where everyone sees something different on their screen and is clueless about what others are talking about? I've always had a strong preference for substance over style.

I like the Getaway DarkBlue, but if there's any blue there I'm color blind.

Wow! Such an abundance of choices! :D

I think we might need a spreadsheet to compare all of the differences. I've just spend a few minutes trying them out--here are just a few of the differences to look for:

* Do avatars appear on the right or left?

* How do the fonts look to you? Some are more readable than others and have a more noticeable contrast between normal, bold, italic, and sarcafont.

* How do you like the default font colors and different background colors? Some are easier on the eyes than others.

* There are miscellaneous differences in the message icons.

* Some of the styles have decorative banners at the top that don't display the WWTBAM Bored title and motto.

For now, I'm using "Getaway". But there are so many others in that Styles Database! 8)

Some have the "next topic" and "previous topic" buttons, so that narrows the choices down for me! YAY!

At that site, I see there's a Demo page that let's you easily select between each of the available styles to see how they look, including being able to click on message threads to see how they look.

Happy theme shopping, everyone! :)

Uh oh. Looks like the Spoiler feature doesn't work on some of these themes, like Getaway. :(

Oh, oh. Spolers don't work with any of the Areo or Getaway themes. :(

Oops. I knew I forgot something.

Adding the spoiler tags and buttons required very slight modifications to each of the two original themes (prosilver and subsilver2.) I forgot to make those changes to all the other themes when I uploaded them.

I'm about to slump over on my keyboard here, so I'll make those changes tomorrow, and post here again when they're done.

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.

Nice ES!

You have been busy!

What is Dave drinking?

Dave is a Longhorns fan?

Well, I guess he got rewarded yesterday for all his hard work.

I still feel bad for our OKBBs though.

More than that, he is an alum.

And he asked for something football/Cowboys/Longhorns. ES went with the Texas ref since it gave him a chance to use a color he doesn't normally get to use....

I'm waiting to see if someone else recognizes themself in the picture.......
