That one answer sure didn't look fed.

Two of the muscle tissue groups are smooth and skeletal -- what's the third?

The kid answered "rough." Sure looked like a SWAG to me.

As far as I know, himself.
If that's true...

Sheesh!
What's the matter with that? Isn't that the point of going on a gameshow in the first place? Or does he just garner both a sheesh and an eyeroll because he's been on more gameshows than you deem appropriate?

There are a lot of rules and regulations in your rigid CoC for gameshow contestants.

Disclosure: I'm not 'sticking up' for Ken Jennings because I'm a fan. I think I saw one of his Jeopardy episodes and I didn't see this show. I saw most of the Grand Slam eps and only rooted for him in the last one because I didn't want the other guy to win.

I agree with MarleysGh0st. There's no way Jennings would be chosen for this show on his own. He doesn't have the personality of the other contestants. And his pretending to not be sure of some of the answers is totally phony. He didn't do himself any favors by appearing on this show (other than winning $500,000).

Of course, Marley will have to speak for himself, but I took the sheesh/eyeroll when he heard that KJ was playing for himself, to be added ironic exasperation to his existing aggravation from accidently missing the airing of this episode...

Again, Marley, of course, must speak for himself, but I think there are many people who believe that "rich" people should play for charity if they come on game shows. But a complication with applying this belief is that "rich" is a relative term. Another complication with applying this belief is that we really don't know what Mr. Jennings is going to do with the money when he gets it. He might very well donate most or all of it. On the show, he seemed more interested in breaking the record than getting the money. IMO

He definitely was into hitting that record-breaking title. He also said that he was going to spend this money on "fun" stuff. He promised his wife a new kitchen (they won't be having much fun once the construction starts , and his son a playhouse. As for being rich... hopefully his J! winnings hadn't been invested in the stock market.

I agree, that faked uncertainty over simplistic questions was really annoying. I do applaud him for the Pocohontas and muscle answers, tho!

Thanks for the offer, Second Chance, but it's not necessary to send me a tape. Reading the questions here (or in the transcript someone on the 5th Grader board posts) is good enough, particularly since I know someone like Ken could answer them with ease.

It was more of a Homer Simpson moment for me, after having watched so many lousy contestants on this show, to have missed one I'd have wanted to see.

It was interesting reading others' explanations for my eyeroll. Here's mine.

1. Ken obviously was invited onto the show because of his "celebrity" status. The precedent on every game show I can think of is that celebrity contestants always play for charity.

2. Having been invited onto the show to play for his own benefit (if that's truly the case--I haven't read any recap of his own yet that might appear on his blog) I don't blame Ken for accepting the offer, but I do roll my eyes at T5GPTB for making it. The fact is, trivia game show fans are not welcome on that show. The 5th Grader producers have a knack for finding contestants who may have college degrees, but are incapable of handling some mighty simple questions. (Or, if they can handle them, they have the acting abilities to pretend to have incredible difficulty with them.)

Any one of us BBs should be able--more often than not--to do what Ken did last night. And I've said before in the 5th Grader threads that walking with $500K is a wise thing to do (rather than risking it sight unseen on an unknown question).* But T5GPTB won't give someone who answers quickly and confidently, like the average J! contestant or the better WWTBAM contestant, that chance. Ken's celebrity brought him this unheard of chance, then he played their game by feigning uncertainty** to provide the 5th Grader style of entertainment? I guess that's reality game shows, these days.

3. If the record for game show winnings was a motivating factor for Ken, what's the value of that, if all of the best competitors don't have equal access to competing for the record? Will we see Brad Rutter on the show next week? Does anyone doubt he could also add another $500K to his totals, or maybe a full $1 million, if he goes for the final question?

*Having made the statement about expected outcomes with the typical 5th Grader stack, I'll admit that I didn't recall that "three types of muscle" classification. While it may appear in some 5th grade textbooks, I also doubt that most 5th graders know that fact, either. So, this week, maybe I'd have had to settle for $300K.

**I'll add a disclaimer to my "uncertainty" statement: Since I didn't see him actually answer any questions and I haven't read his own explanations, estimates of his uncertainly are mere conjecture. But, given his well-known ability with trivia demonstrated on other game shows, conjecture with a fair amount of justification.

When he hemmed and hawed over whether a polar bear was a mammal, or what the contraction "won't" stood for... it made me uncomfortable. The upper tier I can understand. He really wavered on the Pocohontas question, and I was sure he was gonna tank... so, hats off to KJ.

Shockingly enough, some BBs have resisted becoming one of Ogi's Ogres!

His "celebrity" status isn't that of an actor, a singer or a rich girl that poses a lot. It's as a game show contestant. When actors go on a show in their professional capacity (acting, doing press, whatever), they're paid for it. So if a well known game show contestant goes on a show in the capacity of game show contestant, why wouldn't they be playing for themselves?

I think she'd be better off dealing with a professional who can better guide her into understanding her questionable choices a bit more objectively.

I find it more shocking that some BBs have become so entranced as to toss about a phrase such as "Ogi's Ogres".

Well, no, not so shocking now that I think about it.

I invented the phrase while showing support for Ogi during his competition in the Grand Slam tournament last year--after the other BBs we were also rooting for had already been eliminated.

But...

What. Ever.
