The upgrade is finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1 Post by tubadave » Thu Oct 09, 2008 4:24 am

And I'm betting you've already noticed that, lol.

It's really, really, REALLY late, and lb13 (who I gave the key to the back door so he could see the Bored before it went live) has been helping me look things over. So far, so good, I think.

You may have noticed that the layout and look of the Bored is VERY different than what you've been used to for the past year. This is the theme that comes with this version of phpBB. If you want to go back to (a slightly modified version of) the old look, then follow these instructions:

1) Go to your User Control Panel. If you're logged in, it should be in the upper left corner of the page.
2) Select the Board Preferences tab.
3) When the Board Preferences screen comes up, Edit Global settings should already be selected on the left side.
4) Change "My board style" to subsilver2.
5) Click Submit

The new default theme puts avatars on the right side of the screen when you view a thread, which can be a bit disconcerting, so I expect many of you will change back. I did myself, for now.

There are about a zillion themes that can be installed and used, and I intend to put more up here, so that everyone has a variety. And yes, before anyone asks, I'm going to add smileys, too. These are all things I could have done on the old software too, but put it off since I knew I would be doing this upgrade eventually.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There are two things missing right now, features that I added in manually before that did not stick with the upgrade: Spoiler tags and Chat. I will be adding back both of these things as soon as possible, assuming that I can get them working properly.

Anyway, everyone feel free to look around, and let me know if you run into any problems or have questions.

Terrific Dave!

I have to look around at the renovations, but so far so good!

I think I can live with the avatars on the right. It isn't bothering me much.

And I LOVE blue.

Thanks for all the hard work!

This'll take a little getting used to, like a new paint color in the kitchen. I'm sure I can deal with it.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Is the little orange "View first unread post" icon working? It's still taking me to the top of the thread.

It works for me about as well as it did before - the first time I clicked it I would go to the last unread message. However subsequent clicks would take me to the top of the thread. Only if I closed my browser window, or remained idle for several hours, would the link work as it was supposed to. YMMV

NOTE: In your user preferences, it is now possible to select "English (United States)" as your default language, rather than the British English that everyone is defaulting to now. I didn't catch that little change during the upgrade, or I could have set ir for everyone in advance. If I figure out how to change it universally, I will.....I think deleting the British English language pack actually might take care of it.

Who wants to speak English over here anyway? Darn it, I only speak American!

Actually, never mind about the language thing.....deleting the British English language pack defaulted everyone to English (United States).

If someone really wants the British option, for whatever reason, I can very easily put it back. 8)

I'm sure I'll eventually get used to this "upgrade," but my first impression is....

um....

How can I put this nicely?

Sorry, Dave, and I DO appreciate all your hard work, but I liked it better before.

KT, you may not have seen how to go to the other format which makes things a lot closer to the other view of the Bored. Hang in there, I think some stuff is great.

Like we can make things in KillerTomato color really easy!

I did load the subsilver format. I still don't like it.

I admit it....I don't much like change. I didn't have a problem with the old format, and don't see much advantage in the new (other than the pretty colors). I liked the old spoiler tags. I liked the old quote pyramid format. I liked the old post listings.

I'm not saying that I won't either get used to the new, or that I won't come to actually like this format more over time. I'm also not saying that Dave shouldn't have changed it....I really really really appreciate everything he, Beastie Boy, Ed, the Bobs and 'Gor do for us, understand why the change happened. But I can't say I like it.

Sorry to be a buzzkill!

A question: In the subsilver format, the left margin of the post window moves back and forth, depending on the width of the poster's avatar. I find that a little disconcerting. Is there any way to even things out, as they were in the previous format? --Bob

Gonna take some getting used to, but looks pretty good.

I noticed that there is a Friend/Foe option, reminds me of the good ol' days.

Happy belated birthday to the Bored, and thanks Dave!

Thanks for your hard work tubadave!

On my screen, the moderators usernames are alternating red and green. Gosh, that means it is Christmas season already. It must be; it is already sore throat and sniffles season for me. Then the upside down triangle with the exclamation point must be a winter weather warning or something.

It's slightly different, Snaxx. "Mere" moderators are in green. Site administrators are in red. --Bob

I've actually been looking for a way to change that already, but haven't found anything so far. It's either a quirk of the subsilver2 and prosilver styles, or it's a "feature" of phpBB3. I'm already downloading more styles to use, and if it's the latter....well....I guess we'll all get used to it. :)

Thanks for all of the hard work from Dave and LB, as well as the suggestions from the people using the site today!

TANSTAAFL2 referenced the one thing I'm having trouble with finding out how to do.

I like to read the posts from oldest to newest. Before the upgrade, I would click on a thread and after reading the posts in that thread, I would just click the "next" button. Good gosh, now I'm not sure it said next, but it was the button that took me to the thread that was more recent, timewise.

I can't find a way to do that now. Instead, I click on the thread, read the posts in that thread, click the back button on my keyboard and then click on the next thread.

Help!

It is funny that this has even come up, because last week I was going to put in a recommendation to have the "next" button also located at the bottom of the screen, rather than just at the top. It was just me being lazy about having to click the home key on my keyboard, before clicking "next", after I'd finished reading a thread.

I may be the only one who reads the messages this way, and I'm fine whether it can be changed or not.

Thank you again for ALL of the sleep lost. To me, the outcome was well worth it!

I'm pretty sure that clicking the Next Topic link at the top right of the page (it's just above the first post in the thread in the subsilver2 theme) does what you're talking about. I had to experiment with it for a moment after reading your post, since I don't read the Bored that way myself.

(EDIT: I see the problem now. Those links aren't in the prosilver theme that the Bored is now defaulting to. Jump back to the very first post in this thread and switch themes.....then you'll see them.)

It seems feasible that I could find a way to put those links at the bottom of every page as well as the top. I'm pretty good at finding themes and styles and bits of code and incorporating them into what's already here, but what you're talking about would involve some actual editing/rewriting. Perhaps, one of these days, instead of the "subsilver2" and "prosilver" and whatever others themes I find on the internet, I'll be able to put together some "Bored themes" that incorporate design features that people here like best.
