Just saw Jay Thomas' call for the first contestant (no idea if he's called later, as I dunno how far this contestant goes).

He rocked. The contestant asked if he was sure about his answer, and Jay went OFF on him. "Don't ask me again!" They finally turned off the audio on Jay but he was still shouting at the camera.

Hilarious.

Considering how pea took offense at Ogi's comparatively mild "what do you think it is" technique for gaining more thinking time, I can't wait for her reaction to Jay's mock outrage shtick.

Yes, it was different. Ogi has explained the purpose to his stalling (although pea doesn't accept that explanation). Today, the contestant was merely trying to assess Jay's confidence level in his answer, when Jay went postal on him. There was no purpose that served the contestant in that, it was only for the sake of sounding funny.

Interesting the two takes on Jay. Guess it's all a matter of perspective.

Ogi gets crap on this board for trying to optimize the outcome, focusing attention on the contestant and coming up with a collaborative answer. Jay Thomas is hailed as a hero on this board for taking the approach that it's all about him, dictating an answer with no reassurance about why he knows it or how certain he is, then clowning around for as long as Meredith will allow him to promote his career and his satellite radio show and his two upcoming movies. Maybe it's just a budget cutting strategy. The more time they allot to Jay Thomas, the less time they spend asking questions and giving away money. The number of questions per show is way down this season.

As you say, it all depends on one's perspective. I don't blame Jay or Ogi at all. If they are boring, they probably won't be asked back. I think they are both very good Experts, but I don't think they've been thoroughly tested yet. They've both been asked mostly easy questions so far.

TheConfessor supplied part of my answer. The rest of it is that he shouldn't be there as a comedian; he's there as an "expert" whose sole responsibility should be to help the contestant.

I'll admit that my dislike of the ATE lifeline (which I've already posted about in other threads) has me biased against any expert who is not a former contestant on the show, but I think it's a bias that is rooted in reality. Celebrities have, at best, mixed objectives when making appearances on a game show. They may want to help the contestant (or win money for their charity, if they're playing as a celebrity contestant) but they're also there--perhaps primarily there--to plug their latest projects and gain exposure for themselves, which means doing their shticks, even when that might be grossly inappropriate for the game.

I don't think the show needs celebrities taking part in it. If TPTB have to put them there, I want them working under the same ground rules as the contestants and other lifelines.
