Happy birthday, wwtbambored.com!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1 Post by tubadave » Tue Oct 07, 2008 6:37 pm

Perhaps you all thought it was tomorrow, since so many of you first signed up on October 8th last year, but I actually registered the .com name and got things here up and running last year on the 7th. Of course, no one knew about it until the next day, but that's beside the point.

So, in honor of this Bored turning one, I've decided that this is a good time to go forward with the software upgrade (from phpBB 2 to phpBB 3) I've been planning. I'm off work the next two days (Wed-Thurs) so, at some point late tomorrow night (unless I suddenly stop being so sleepy and decide I can stay up tonight) the Bored will go offline for an undetermined amount of time. I'll try to give the late-night lurkers as much warning as I can.

It is my intention to back everything up, perform the upgrade, test to make sure everything works, and then put the Bored back online. No one will be able to post or access the Bored while I'm doing this, but fear not....if I run into any problems that could cause major delays (i.e. delays that would prevent me from having everything up and running by the next morning) I will simply revert to the backup and put the Bored back like I found it while I go back to the drawing board.

Once everything is done, feel free to PM me with any problems or quirks you encounter. I'm not expecting the transition to be 100% perfect, but I'm going to try and make everything as smooth as possible.

And thank you, to all of you, for being here this past year. I may not post a whole lot or even seem like I'm around that much, but I do still enjoy being a part of this community. There's a small part of me that is still a little bit awestruck at the idea that I'm hosting "the Bored" on my webspace, and you all are OK with that, and have chosen to stay here. Hopefully, this year will be the first of many to come.

I am more than 'okay' with you hosting. I am incredibly grateful. I remember feeling something close to panic when the Bored went down.

Thank you Dave. Very, very much.

And thank you BBs for all of you. Okay, that is sometimes modified in and election year, but I forget pretty quickly.

Uncle Dave is going to give us a nice new shiny Bored for our birthday and you are worried about the rankings?

Sweetie, you need to think about your priorities!

Well, the rankings gratiutous posters would miss their chance to be gratuitous without them.... although I have a feeling that both things could get accomplished tomorrow with a little planning....

And I would have a hard time referrring to the BoredMeister as Uncle Dave, given the fact that he is four months younger then I am. He is one of the few people on the Bored who I can berate as a young whippersnapper..... :P

I don't think it'll take Dave 24 hours. He's gonna work on it at night....

He doesn't want to be responsible for all of us going into bored withdrawal symptoms and getting less work done than we already do (well, some of us anyway).

I think he said it's only gonna be a late night thing. Maybe I can catch up on my sleep the next couple of nights. :)

It would probably affect the left coasters the most, although I have determined that The Confessor either sleeps very little or works 2nd shift. :?

You may call him Uncle Dave, if you wish. To me, he always will be the delightful Grape Boy that I met in San Antonio.

I don't think I ever did get any peeled grapes, though. Hmmn.

Happy anniversary, Grape Boy and everybody!

I think the work productivity of the US will go up substantially when Dave does the upgrade. The bosses and customers o' America are going to wonder just what the heck happened?

Confessor and Stephenie Meyer are in cahoots me thinks.

Edited to add: I meant to say: I think the productivity of the Bored members will go up substantially WHILE Dave is doing the upgrade. :D The bosses and customers o' America will be wondering just what the heck is happening!

I'm not so sure about this "Uncle Dave" bit.....but Ms. Shiny Car, I'm still happy to be Grape Boy to you. :D

lb13, I don't care about your paltry four months, if you call me "whippersnapper" I will be on the next Southwest flight to STL so I can come smack you. Better yet, I'll come to Wally World and move things around on the shelves! So simple, yet so diabolically evil!!! muhahahahahaha

er...ahem

Barring a sudden and major collapse from my web host, Mr. Beast's streak should not be threatened. When I get started, I don't plan on this taking more than an hour or two, but you know how it sometimes goes when you're planning things.

Excellent! While the bored is down, I will be providing revenue to Dave's employer. Fitting, since I was the first to take advantage of the invitation to come somewhere where nobody could tell us what to do!

I bet that you'll be able to post them if this week's edition is called 'Tubas are sexy and stuff'.

Now you have to try and figure out the callback. Ha!
We, the HK Brigade, do hereby salute you, Marley, for your steadfast devotion to ontopicosity. Well done, sir!
