AT&T

Some guy came by today and said that fiber optic cables were being installed in my neighborhood by AT&T and as a result of this, if I used AT&T for the Internet, my connection would be faster. They also have cable service and it would all be cheaper than using Time Warner.

Does anyone use AT&T for this stuff?

Are you happy with it?

The issue is the number of connection you can have.

Check that if you have 3 TVs and a computer and a phone you aren't limited.

I don't have it, but a guy came by my house last week with pretty much the same spiel, substituting "Cox" for "Time Warner." They may be installing fiber optic, but I think the respective guys at the door are simply part of some new marketing approach.

I have AT&T phone and DSL for my computer, which is very high speed and has worked perfectly since I moved here almost 3 years ago until THIS WEEK.

When your phone service is out, so is your internet. Only draw back I know of. Our cable is not through AT&T, so I can't answer that part of it.

I still think Evil Squirrel had something to do with my service interruption.

We have AT&T for phone and internet, and their affiliate, DISH network, for satellite TV.

Bundling those three services saves us some bucks.

I would say the DSL has had a tad more downtime than out old cable modem, but I also think most of that can be traced to our amateurish local installer (they don't have AT&T employees to install here, so they contract with local guys. Sometimes they are no so good.)

I am even less happy with satellite TV than I thought I would be, here in the stormy midwest. Way too many signal losses in the summer. Where you are could be fine, although it's not clear you're even considering new TV service.

Here's the bottom line: you could get faster service with DSL. It depends on the current state of your other installation, and how many people in your neighborhood have the same kind of connection. But MOST people, those who do not place high demands on their systems, and use their internet provider mainly for shopping, Boreding, emailing, and researching would never even notice whether it was faster or slower. The only ways you're likely to notice a difference is if you download large volumes of material (streaming movies to your computer, for instance) or maintaining a high volume web site or something. So if you switch, first make sure it's at least expense-neutral (all ISPs like to bury hidden fees way deep in the fine print) and that you have local service options available.

I will say that our service experience with AT&T has been positive, once we figured out how to move past the first couple of layers and go directly to an American who knew what he or she was talking about and wasn't reading from a script.

I didn't know that AT&T was doing that, I'd switch to Verizon's FIOS if I could.

Just make sure that it's really available and not "coming soon". Apparently Verizon sold a lot of people FIOS that that they didn't get for over a year and they had to make do with Direct TV and DSL until then.

The AT&T Uverse is supposed to be faster than Verizon's FIOS. The cable service is also supposed to have better quality HD than Time Warner's because the cabling isn't as compressed. Plus we are supposed to be able to get free AT&T service at all internet hot spots.

They are installing in on October 7th. They are giving me the first month free. They told me not to cancel Time Warner cable until I am sure that their service works and I am happy with it.

We will also get more premium channels the whole thing will save me $50 a month because I am bundling. They are also throwing in their own own DVR which can record up to four channels at a time.

NICE! My Time Warner DVR only does 2 channels -- and you can't watch a third.

Same with our Cable One service, Dimmzy. Four channels at a time would be awesome, in my opinion.

We have internet/phone/cable through Cable One. I can't beat the cost of phone with unlimited long distance. There are a few channels we can't get on Cable One that I'd enjoy having. (like DIY network) Eric still wants the NFL channel too, but that is another story.

I've been very, very happy with our service.

We have this. We bundle our internet, cable & cell phones, but we only save about $5.00 for the bundling. The cale is about $4 more that what we were paying for Dish Network, but we have twice as many channels, and the 4 recording DVR. As of last week, any room with a cable receiver box can tap into the DVR to watch recorded shows in any room. Nice free upgrade, eh?

I just can't get over my distaste of AT&T to try their other products. I have had their cell phone service for nearly two years and I am counting the days until I can move to another carrier.

Odd little charges show up all the time on my bill and I have to call them to get them corrected. They always remove them immediately but I always have to double check the bill and make the time to call. Pain in the behind.
