The honeymoon is over.

#1 Post by marrymeflyfree » Thu Sep 18, 2008 7:31 pm

My formerly sweet and ever-happy munchkin is teething. That she also figured out yelling this week is probably not a coincidence.

Any recs on stuff she can bite? Her current favorite teether is my chin. Sweet, but I learned many years ago that makeup doesn't cover hickeys terribly well. I think we talked about Hyland's teething tablets here a while back, and I will give them an enthusiastic thumbs up now that I've had a chance to use them.

Someone suggested a cold carrot since she doesn't yet have any teeth to bite chunks off with. I even read something about a chicken bone, stripped of it's sharp parts, is good, but I'm going to pass on that! I'm not a fan of the gel-filled plastic thingies, either. Any tried-and-trues to pass on?

I almost picked up some biscuits yesterday, but we're trying to hold off on any solids until she's about 6 months or so. Poor thing. I just took a good look, and I see two little swollen buds on top and the bottoms don't look much better. Maybe she'll just get this round over with all at once, at least!

We used cold carrots... but regardless there is no magic solution.

We also used teething biscuits but they tend to turn mush after being sucked on and get into everything - so use major bibs when use them.

Yes, they make a nasty mess, but they work.

I saw this post on another board.

Hands down, my baby's favorite soother is a fresh washcloth soaked in some brewed chamomile tea that I keep cold and ready in the fridge.
When I had my wisdom teeth out, chewing on tea bags helped take down the swelling, so I can see how it might help.

We're using all sorts of stuff. Cold carrots worked really well. We bought a teether that looks like a raspberry that we can stick in the freezer. Frankie likes knuckles, but now that he's got an actual tooth it's not really an option. And Mom has a bracelet and matching pendant that at first look, look like faux jade, but actually are silicon teething toys.

Baby Orajel works too. The girls use it when they get their braces adjusted.

Teething biscuits aren't really solid food. They turn to mush in about 5 seconds, depending on the amount of drool the little one produces.
A bib is a must, or sometimes I just leave him in his diaper and wash him down once he finished it.

You have to watch carefully and make sure they don't bite off a little piece once they get it good and gooey.

A cold wash cloth works too.

Wet a washcloth and freeze it. Let it soften a bit and then let her chew it.

Once she gets a few teeth, best teething stuff is frozen veggies and frozen diced fruit.

We also used the fruit strainer feeder thingy with cold/frozen stuff in it.

Thanks for the tips, everyone! Tonight wasn't as bad as yesterday, but we are just beginning....I think the cool chamomile washcloth is next on the list to try.

I gotta say, I don't see the problem with teething rings. All of my girls loved them and it kept them quiet and their gums temporarily numb. Not all teething rings are filled with gel.

Biter biscuits are a pain cuz they can break off and kiddie can choke. They're too messy for me. I'm ocd or something.

Baby Orajel is great cuz it numbs for a long time. I still use it on Olivia and she's 15 months.

The frozen washcloth thing might work, though. You might be able to find some little baby sized washcloths that might be easier for little Nina to hold.

My mom used to rub Paregoric on our gums. After that, we were out like a light.

Ugh. This is when you feel so helpless!

Mine weren't early teethers, with Erin on the extreme end of the spectrum, getting her first tooth on her first birthday. The biter biscuits are better when they're older like that, but don't underestimate the mess. They form some kind of paste that could be used for plaster. No lie.

Mini-me got his name because he was an early walker, so when he was teething this little midget would come up and bite your hand. I guess it's easier to have late teethers.

The other two were about 8-9 months old, and I used those toys you could freeze, but I don't know what was in them. They never leaked though. They also make bibs with little teething toys attached, but the neckhole was really small for my melon-headed kids. Those are good so the toys don't fall so far away they can't reach them, and the terry cloth absorbs the drool.

Good luck! This will pass soon enough!

excellent, as is the Baby Orajel suggestion, and I wouldn't competely disregard the gel-filled teethers without giving them a try. Good luck, bless your heart.
