The weather radar which became NEXRAD is based on the "1988 Doppler" radars that became the standard around the country. "1988 Doppler" being the type of Doppler Weather Radar introduced in that year.

But how websites came to say that Doppler invented Doppler Radar in that year is hard to understand. Christian Doppler died in 1853. Doppler Radar, in the sense of being able to use knowledge of the Doppler Effect to extract velocity information from radar returns, was used almost from the very beginning of radar in the 1940s. Heck, police radar guns use the Doppler Effect. Those have been around since the 1950s.
Spoiler
I was wondering if the Doppler Fanny mentioned was THE Doppler, since I was pretty sure he was an old time scientist. I was beginning to wonder if some other guy named Doppler invented Doppler Radar.

But I know it came to be in 1988, regardless of who invented it.....

"Mothers are the Invention of Necessity"

1. 1843 - Alexander Bain invents the fax machine.

This was probably the one that messed up the Timeline more than anything else (including the Doppler thang). Some people had several inventions in the right order, but were off one or two spaces, but I guess that's kind of the basis of Timeline. So I guess that I'll need to make reverse Timelines with the first one obviously being the first, but I thought it was so interesting that the fax machine is actually that old that I wanted to use it. Because this is all about learning stuff, right?

2. 1855 - Georges Audemars creates rayon.

3. 1861 - Linus Yale invents the cylinder lock.

4. 1898 - Edwin Prescott patents the roller coaster.

5. 1919 - Charles Strite comes up with the pop-up toaster.

6. 1937 - Chester F. Carlson invents the photocopier.

7. 1956 - Bettie Nesmith Graham creates what will come to be known as Liquid Paper.

8. 1968 - Douglas Engelbart demonstrates the modern computer mouse.

9. 1974 - Gynecologist Giorgio Fischer develops a successful liposuction procedure.

10. 1988 - Christian Andreas Doppler creates Doppler Radar.

Although this was probably be better worded as Doppler Radar is created and named for CAD, or something

Bonus (10 points): What was the original name of Liquid Paper? Mistake Out.

Big props to Christie and Peacock for being the only ones to get this! Although if LFHP would've been the one to give me "Oh, shit!" he would've gotten some points.

So here's how I decided to do the scoring:

I didn't want just throw it out because that penalizes people who got it right. (And they actually did get it right, because the goal was to put the invention with the year and that was the invention, the additional information in the clue was just wrong.)

However, if it was wrong, I considered where they put the Doppler event and switched it with 1988 and, if it that made them both right, they got points. Although I had decided this before I did any scoring, this did give Peacock a perfect score, so I think it was the right decision.

I also gave 4 points to anybody who put it down as 1843, since that was the only year in the game where Doppler was still alive and the only possible year that the clue could have been correct if read by inventor and not invention.

Funny thing is, I originally had just listed the inventions, but I decided to try and jazz it up and maybe give a little help by writing the clues. Guess I should have just taken the easy way out!

Doppler Radar did not "come to be in 1988". A particular type of Doppler Weather Radar was introduced that year but Doppler Radar was around since the invention of radar in the 1930s and 1940s.

As I pointed out before, police radar guns used in the 1950s used Doppler Radar. That's how they could tell the speed of the vehicle they were aimed at. The frequency of the signal reflected back was distorted in a measurable way by the speed of the car.

Fanny's solution on the scoring is fine. Fantastic, even. Better than I would have come up with and I'm not disputing how points were awarded or what the correct answers should have been.

But it is still not true that Doppler Radar came to be in 1988.

OK, let's put it this way....

The first thing that comes into my mind when I hear "Doppler Radar" is the year 1988, regardless of the situation. And there is a good reason for that somewhere that I may not totally understand, but I know something very big came to be in Doppler radar in that glorious year....

In an effort to make only slightly less embarrassing, I have to point out that I did have the fax machine listed as the first invention on the list. Shouldn't I get four points?

I'm a dumby with illegible numerals! I wrote down 4 in the trusty notebook, but it looked like a 1. In my defense, I was trying to go fast because I was behind on scoring, but still make sure I added correctly.

Not only did you not get a goose egg, you are one of only THREE people (the other two were AJ and peacock) to get that one correct!

I'm updating the COMPUTER spreadsheet right now and giving you an extra two points for being nice about pointing out my error.

OK. I just wanted to be clear that the problem with that particular fact was not just that Doppler did not invent Doppler Radar but also that Doppler Radar was not invented in 1988.
