Answers & Points Timeline, Game 6 Monday Sept 8

#1 Post by Here's Fanny! » Mon Sep 08, 2008 8:04 am

Yay, here we are at a new, mistake-free week! Ha! I had "stuff" to deal with this weekend that I'm still wading through, hopefully I'll have scoring up to date by the end of the day. Although I only have two days worth (three after the weekend closes) I still feel incredibly behind.

So, it's Monday again. Which means it's time for another 'Ease you into your week straight up Timeline'. Maybe, I don't know. Somehow I think the more complicated ones are easier because you have bits and pieces to work on and fit together. We'll see.

Today is the same as last Monday, just stick the answers in bold at the end of each question. And don't forget the bonus!

Timeline - September 8

"Stuff that Happened in America Even Before I Was Born"

1. Anyone remember this one? The Battle of the Alamo takes place, with the greatly outnumbered Texians holding on for 12 days before succumbing to Santa Anna's troops.

2. On August 1, Colorado becomes the 38th state admitted to the Union. This one is really easy if you think about it.

3. Virginia Dare, credited with being the first English birth on American soil, is born on Roanoke Island in what would later become North Carolina.

4. Thomas Jefferson gets more than he bargains for when he tries to buy New Orleans and Napoleon, being a bit strapped at the moment, offers him the entire Louisiana Territory.

5. Crazy Horse and George Armstrong Custer get it on like Donkey Kong at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Sitting Bull just stays home after giving the rest of the Hunkpapa a big pep talk. Guess it worked.

6. William Bradford and the rest of those wacky Mayflower dudes found Plymouth Colony.

7. Christopher Columbus leaves Spain with the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria and a groovy plan to get to Asia. Until some big hunks of land get in his way.

8. St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest city in America, is founded by the Spanish under Admiral Pedro Menendez de Aviles.

Bonus: (10 points) The only clue as to what happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke was this word carved on a fort post.

Freebie #1 Four different centuries are represented.

Freebie #2 None of these events occurred in the 18th century (that's the 1700s, right? I get confused).

Freebie #3 Two of the above occurred in the same year.

Freebie #4 St. Augustine has been in business for 22 years when Virginia Dare was born.

Scoring (80 points possible - plus bonus):
Perfect (exact year) = 10 pts
Close (+/- 2 years) = 5 pts
Near (+/- 4 years) = 2 pts
Ballpark (correct decade) = 1 pt

Lots of good Lost jokes here, like 4 8 15 16 23 42...but I think the answer was something like CROATAN.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

1876 Yes, because everyone knows August 1st is Swiss National Day - which holds the key to the answer.

Here's Fanny! wrote:Yay, here we are at a new, mistake-free week!

Everybody got the Centennial State and put the same year clue together with Little Bighorn, yay! Plasticene actually put 1867, but I know it was just a swap because I'm dyslexic that way as well, so he got the points.

Croatoan

I was generous with the spelling on this one. And they must have still been using the same books in grade school that I had when lb was in school, because I remember that picture, too! Did you also have the story about a girl named America Jane who was taking a needle in a piece of cloth to a neighbour and an Indian girl helped her find it?
