Answers and Points Timeline, Game 5 Friday/Weekend Sept 5-7

#1 Post by Here's Fanny! » Fri Sep 05, 2008 7:13 am

So, here we are at the first dreaded Friday/Weekend game! I had originally planned for the games to get more complicated as the week went on, but for this one I'm just going with a straight name the year Timeline and we'll see how that goes.

As for the Doppler snafu from Wednesday, I think I've decided how to handle that one but it will probably take me a little longer to do the scoring.

Today's format should be the same as Monday, c/p the questions and insert the year in bold for each one. And don't forget the bonus, of course!

Timeline - September 5-7

"This Day in History"

This was originally going to be the kick off game, so all these events happened on September 1st. Just which September 1st? You tell me! Make sure to check out the Freebies below the bonus question for some help (or to just add to the general confusion. Ha!).

Scoring (110 points possible):

Exact year = 10 pts
+/- 2 years = 5 pts
+/- 4 years (post 1900) = 3 pt
+/- 10 years (pre 1900) = 3 pt
Decade (post 1900) = 1 pt
Century (pre 1900) = 1 pt

1. A joint U.S. - French expedition team discovers the wreckage of the Titanic.

2. A male calf named Nakai is the first orca born to be conceived by artificial insemination.

3. Aaron Burr is acquitted of plotting to establish an independent republic.

4. Bobby Fischer defeats Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland for the World Chess Championship.

5. General George Marshall is sworn in as chief of staff of the United States Army.

6. Gloria Stefan (Fajardo) is born in Havana, Cuba.

7. King Henry VIII makes Anne Boleyn the Marquess of Pembroke.

8. King Louis XIV of France dies after a 72 year reign.

9. The Boston Subway opens.

10. The city of St Petersburg has its name changed to Petrograd.

Bonus: What is the name of the IVF baby mentioned in Freebie #3? (10 points)

Freebies:

1. Anne Boleyn was beheaded in 1536.
2. None of these events took place in the 17th century.
3. The first ‘test tube’ baby was 23 years old in Nakai was born.
4. 3 centuries are represented only once.
5. The Subway had been operating for 6 years when the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series.

Spoiler
1. A joint U.S. - French expedition team discovers the wreckage of the Titanic. 5 years after the movie based on Clive Cussler’s book 1985

2. A male calf named Nakai is the first orca born to be conceived by artificial insemination. From clue 3 Louise Brown was late 1970’s 78 I think so 2001

3. Aaron Burr is acquitted of plotting to establish an independent republic. 1805

4. Bobby Fischer defeats Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland for the World Chess Championship. Early 70’s 1973

5. General George Marshall is sworn in as chief of staff of the United States Army. Just at the start of WWII for everyone else 1939

6. Gloria Stefan (Fajardo) is born in Havana, Cuba. Shouldn’t that be Estefan late 50’s 1957

7. King Henry VIII makes Anne Boleyn the Marquess of Pembroke. She was queen from 1533-1536 so just before that 1532 Love The Tudors

8. King Louis XIV of France dies after a 72 year reign. Lets go back from 1791 XVI 16 years XV 60 years so XIV dies in 1715

9. The Boston Subway opens. The Boston Red Sox won their first World Series in 1912 the Boston team that won the series in 1903 was called the Americans. However since I am probably one of the few people who know and since by clue 4 there must be more than 1 event in the 1800s this I will say 1897

10. The city of St Petersburg has its name changed to Petrograd. As the Russian capital it was thought to be too German and changed at the outbreak of WWI in 1914

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Here's Fanny! wrote:So, here we are at the first dreaded Friday/Weekend game!
