Who sells plain paper tape?

I needed some to ship a package via registered mail (no other shipping method accepted where it was going). I bought some from Staples that they called paper tape, but it has a glossy finish and can't be used. They hid the finish under the plastic wrapping so I couldn't tell until getting it home. I ended up buying the more expensive fiber-reinforced stuff. It's overkill, both in terms of the quantity I had to purchase and in terms of the package it was sealing.

So who carries the plain paper tape in their stores? I wasn't able to find it anywhere.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

We carry 12 different colors of duct tape at the Wal.....

We have all kinds of packaging tape, but I don't know about what you're looking for...

Did you hear the Walmart in Wasilla sells more duct tape than any other?

There's no reason why tape with a glossy finish cannot be used on registered mail. I don't understand the problem.

Registered mail requires USPS inked stamps over the closure, so that you know it hasn't been opened or tampered with. The glossy stuff won't hold the ink.

They don't like it because the ink stamp stuff smears. I sent a registered package earlier this week and they retaped the thing for me-- they didn't know where to find paper tape, they said they just have it because They Are the Postal Service. I found one small roll at Office Max, everyone sells the shiny stuff, which is Bad.

Thanks, gs and wintergreen, for expanding my information about the USPS and registered mail. I know I've sent stuff via registered mail, but perhaps it just happened to be in big padded envelopes so the tape thing didn't come into play.
