... that the Irish in Omaha, Nebraska were singled out by the American Protective Association for exclusion from public office in the 1890s?

From today's Wikipedia front page.

Irish immigrants in America were poorly treated for much of the 19th century, but especially in the years during and immediately after the Famine.

The biggest difference between us and the Chinese immigrants, or today's Hispanic and Latino immigrants, is that we don't have many "racial" characteristics that made us stand out too radically from the majority. Made it much easier to assimilate.

Not shockingly -- I did know it.

(One of the earlier Irish Catholic families in Omaha.)

Wasn't it Nebraska that tried to outlaw speaking German during WWI, but had the law overturned by the US Supreme Court? I might be misremembering the details, but it was something like that.

If true, they don't seem to cotton much to furriners, do they?

My dad made a point of telling me that when his father came from Ireland to Philadelphia in 1907, it was common to see signs that read, "Help Wanted- No Irish Need Apply."
I am about 25% sure of this.
