While I certainly know what they meant, the phrase "lower 48" is really quite the misnomer. My question this morning was about the definition of a narcissist. That reinforced my suspicion that they customize each question to the participant. A little more dicey there. Since the Aleutian Island chain extends well into the Eastern hemisphere theoretically by convention one could say that Alaska is both farther west and farther east than the "middle 48". I must correct myself. The entire 1500 mile stretch of the Hawaiian archipelago, with the exception of Midway Island, which is an unincorporated territory of the US, makes up the state of Hawaii (something I knew but managed to initially overlook).
