Place your bets now.

#1 Post by BackInTex » Wed Jun 04, 2014 5:23 pm

Will I make it or not?

This is the 'plan' for next Wednesday with my son's Boy Scout troop.
Guadalupe Peak Trail
On a clear day, the view from the "Top of Texas" (8,751 feet, or 2,667 meters) is outstanding. The trail is very steep, but is well established. Some areas are exposed to cliff edges. It is rated strenuous, with 3,000 feet of elevation gain. The round trip distance is 8.4 miles, and generally takes 6-8 hours
My wife is taking the under. :x

What? I haven't even had to have them rotated yet. They've got lots of miles left in them.

Good luck with that! I did Emory peak at Big Bend some 25 years ago when I was still semi young and in about as good a shape as I am ever likely to be in. It still was a pain in the ass. And just about everything else...

And just to make it fun I was on my own with mountain lion warnings posted along the trail. Probably not the smartest thing I ever did but it sure kept you alert!

Wouldn't do it now without a palanquin and a team to carry me.

Where going to Big Bend on Monday. But not doing a huge hike then. Just a couple of small ones probably up to Keyhole.

Well, you should have taken the under. Actually it was non-starter. After three days of 6-10 hours in the car and not getting to bed before midnight, the boys mutinied and said they were staying put at Balmorhea State Park on the last day. I can't say I blame them. A beautiful part of the country but so far between things. They stayed and swam while I and the Scout Master went to Ft. Davis National Historical Site. We did do a small hike, but I enjoyed lunch at The Drug Store the most. If you are ever in Ft. Davis, TX, The Drug Store is a must.

I had the Chicken Fried Steak and a vanilla malt. And because I'm such a s**t, I texted the below picture to my son who along with the other boys decided to stay at camp, in 106 degree heat, rather than go into town with us.

We did do a decent hike up the Lost Mine Trail at Big Bend. It was 2.4 miles each way going from about 5800 ft to 6900. I sweated, but wasn't beat.

Well, dang! I was betting on the capability of BiT and his cyborg hips. I never considered the possibility that the scouts would wimp out. :P

Oh, and if the excessive heat was a factor in the boys not wanting to climb a mountain, maybe their next excursion ought to be to one of the Rockies, where altitude comes with cold.

Or they could try Mt. Washington, in New Hampshire.
