I’ll offer you a wager. Let’s say $1000. Between 2019 and 2028, the average annual worldwide temperature as determined by NASA will reach a record high more often than it will reach a record low. If there’s a tie (including 0-0), you win. —Bob

By record you mean since 1850 and the end of the little ice age. I'd be willing to bet the satilite record will not be .5C higher in 2028

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Waste = Plastic items I used only once, like a straw (switching to no straw or a paper one). Still researching the plastic toothbrush situation. Bamboo sounds nice.

Not putting a few grocery items in a bag if I am going to just carry them from the car into the house and put them away.

Walking or riding a bike or the light rail instead of using gasoline.

I think if these are choices we make ourselves, and don't lecture other people about them, they do not have to be seen as extreme or arrogant or, you guessed it, hysteria (I never did like this thread title, and it just won't go away - it is the longest epitaph ever). I am not making laws, only choices.

Key word is choices, in non-identified actually manmade global warming situations.

The thing is, sometimes other people have the power to make choices for us, whether we like it or not. That's when government has to step in and decide whose choices will prevail. And if government doesn't act, that makes the decision for us as well.

Here's an example. California just passed a law. I've seen it misdescribed on the Web so I thought I'd clear things up here. Restaurants will be required to stop giving out plastic straws. (There's no law against individuals actually using them, which is the incorrect description I've seen.) The issue isn't so much petroleum usage. It's that way too many of the straws end up in the ocean, where they never break down and end up in the food chain. So restaurants having the choice to give out plastic straws results in my not having the choice to enjoy local seafood that's unaffected by this stuff. --Bob

If we all chose to stop using/wasting plastic straws, the government wouldn't need to do anything.

That's true, but I don't think it's realistic. If the straws are made available, a lot of people will use them. Not necessarily because they have an abiding love for plastic straws, but just because that happens to be what's in front of them. --Bob

California doesn't even control other states. But there's already a lot of plastic crap off the California coast, and I'd like to at least start the process of getting rid of it. In this context, I'm not willing to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. --Bob

This one is just for laughs.

There are a couple of reasons for this. Unfortunately, because of the rapidly melting icecaps due to climate change, the sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic are much colder than average. So, all that ice, that literally ice water coming into the Atlantic, keeping things cool. And a developing El Nino may actually increase wind shear, basically, tear apart storms as they come off the coast of Africa— Al Roker

Another moronic lie from BJ.

Right. I get it. Now STFU. Do you want to fight climate change or not? If you do, there’s no harm in a little white lie that convinces men their balls are shrinking, is there? If you think about it, it’s one of the few things that might actually get a reaction from conservative white guys. So just go along, OK?"

Several Republicans who joined the House Climate Solutions Caucus in the run-up to this year’s midterm elections — ... — lost their bids to return to Congress, according to the latest voting results from Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Even the co-founder of the group, Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo (FL) couldn’t retain his seat in a midterm election that saw Democrats take firm control of the House of Representatives.

He did play a significant role in reducing the production in many Middle East countries (e.g. Libya).
