Re: Seeking EVERYONE'S Opinion On Proposed Political Forum
Speaking only for myself, I wouldn't expect to move anything unilaterally unless it seemed pretty clear cut to me. I would hope that people starting political threads would put them in the Political forum in the first instance.

Re: Seeking EVERYONE'S Opinion On Proposed Political Forum
This was never answered, but is not the best solution, as it will force (uninterested) people to look in the political forum for non-political threads that were hijacked.SportsFan68 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 16, 2023 5:37 pmDoes that mean that when non-political threads become political, they're removed to the new forum?silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Wed Aug 16, 2023 3:29 pmI had the same thought about the Harvey List thread. I am in favor of setting up a political forum but I also know that some threads that start out as non-political become political when someone injects a political comment and someone else on the opposite side replies to it. And I know I'm guilty of doing that sometimes as well.
I propose that political posts added to non-political ones get spoilered and the offending poster has their account suspended for a time period that increases for each subsequent violation. Everyone gets 1 "oopsie" and suspensions go up dramatically from there. I believe that is the only way that some of these people will learn to resist shitting all over the place. The text of such spoilers could read something like, "VIOLATION - 3 Day Suspension."

I'm in favor of the concept, but will the current political threads be moving to the new forum? If so, will there be any threads left?

Re: Seeking EVERYONE'S Opinion On Proposed Political Forum
I think it might take a while-but I think the Bored will find its new identity for that iteration eventually. If it doesn't, it deserves to die. It needs the freedom. Give it wings, make it fly.
one idea is that people should make a special effort to help the new iteration get a good start-do some posting even if it seems stupid.
Some latitude would be required-for example, I just learned that Sean Connery played Allan Quatermain (famous fictionalAfrican Hunter) in The League of Extraordianry Gentlemen so I started watching it.
I thought it was funny that everybody in the bar where he was recruited was dressed the same and I could have fit right in with my Africa duds. Just a funny observation (to me) but not meant to start a fight or anything.
But that is the type of post that might be required to save the Bored and get our sea legs.
To say nothing of Beebs and Tgirl making me disappear after I lug their gold out of the mountains. (LOL)

I would like to repeat my suggestion of getting a Games Archive forum. Frank's games are all in a single thread each so finding and moving them should be easy. Other multi-day games would require a bit more work, but you could put all the daily threads for one game into a single subforum. (I'm not sure we need the promos, delightful as they are, but that's a matter for the Bored to decide.)

Sorry people. Gone are the days where all we talked about was WWTBAM. And this is what the bored has evolved into given the people and personalities who have stayed here. You don't like the political posts, well, don't open them. You have that freedom of choice. But I really think it would do you good to get all sides of the important issues of the day.
The only thing I would ask for is that some of these personalities refrain from the personal attacks, the ridicule and the trolling they do and stick to the issues they are defending. I will personally stop that from this point on, only responding in kind to what is directed at me.

That's kind of all I was asking for to begin with: civility. I'd prefer to see if people can stick to this before we go to a more Draconian solution.flockofseagulls104 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 6:17 pmThe only thing I would ask for is that some of these personalities refrain from the personal attacks, the ridicule and the trolling they do and stick to the issues they are defending. I have my doubts, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I don't understand the need for this other than as an archive. They're just fine and very visible as part of the main forum...
Creating a subforum for anything in this community requires a drastic need, and I don't think having a separate forum for what few games get posted here is necessary...

I vote no.
We had a Moratorium Lounge at one time. I don’t think that worked out like folks thought.
Moving a thread is a form of censorship. Either we have censorship or we don’t.
What happens when there is a disagreement on whether something is political or not?
Is posting election results political? Sure. But that’s not why folks quit coming and folks are suggesting a different forum.

Re: Seeking EVERYONE'S Opinion On Proposed Political Forum
I vote no for two reasons.
First, it applies a draconian solution to an easily enough solved problem. If you don't like the political threads, don't click on them. Many replies to political assertions indicate a relish for the fight, not the possibility that it might change some minds.
Second, it lends itself to manipulation. Anyone who doesn't like a topic or the way a thread is going can just introduce politics.

Re: Seeking EVERYONE'S Opinion On Proposed Political Forum
How about a self-policing "Keep It Simple Stupid" policy that doesn't require any threads being moved or penalties or whatever.
some version of the following--
1) Anybody who desires to post an obvious political topic-puts it in the new Political forum.
2) Other threads are put here-if they take a political turn or whatever so be it-It is natural at this point-people can still choose to participate here as that would be a natural turn.
Provides needed latitude in either direction.
3) The only policing would be to make sure that obvious political threads go there right away.
4) Maybe if a thread here takes a hard political turn-that offshoot could transfer there as a segment to continue where it belongs. The mechanism of that would need to be figured out as we go=Simply put-maybe start a new thread there.

Re: Seeking EVERYONE'S Opinion On Proposed Political Forum
I vote yes to a new forum, as I feel like I proposed it recently and at least once before - HOWEVER, I get that it would be a hassle, and does not solve or improve everything, and it may in fact add a wrinkle to the basic premise of free speech, which is more important than any of our particular positions.
So, my new proposal is, if we don't create a new forum: If you want to start a thread on a known, clearly political topic, start your post thread title with the word POLITICAL. This would make it even more obvious not to click on it, if that's our choice. If a thread strays into political territory, one way to guess at that is that it's gone to page 2, and we can, as has been recommended, just not click on it.
The more important message is that for folks who don't primarily post political stuff, we need more fluff. I promise to provide more fluff. Or sometimes depth, but mostly fluff (check back in a few minutes for a review).

In some cases, it's not the relish for a fight, but perhaps a test or trial run of expressing a position here where one may know it will be picked apart by some very good pick-a-aparters. Sor of a debate practice field, if you will.SportsFan68 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 11:42 amMany replies to political assertions indicate a relish for the fight, not the possibility that it might change some minds.
