Anyone? Anyone?

One of my friends belongs to Rick Warren's church. I have no respect for it!

That particular church sent out the message to her letting her know how horribly evil the Harry Potter books were, without reading them first.
They quoted from the Onion parody which said that the book was inciting kids to practice witchcraft.

The best Onion quotes from the letter:
"Jesus died because He was weak and stupid."

"Harry is an absolute godsend to our cause," said High Priest Egan of the First Church Of Satan in Salem, MA. "An organization like ours thrives on new blood - no pun intended - and we've had more applicants than we can handle lately. And, of course, practically all of them are virgins, which is gravy."
And here is dear Ashley, a 9 year old, the typical average age reader of Harry Potter: "I used to believe in what they taught us at Sunday School," said Ashley, conjuring up an ancient spell to summon Cerebus, the three-headed hound of hell. "But the Harry Potter books showed me that magic is real, something I can learn and use right now, and that the Bible is nothing but boring lies."
How could anyone believe that the quotes were real? Did they believe the letter just because it was sent out by the church? If the latter situation is the case, then they have been seriously brainwashed by their church!

Do you think that Obama will do any better if they held a similar discussion of the issues (not a debate) at a different church venue? (Well, maybe a mosque. )

[Note: I did not get to see all of it, but I did get to see some clips of his answers on the "big issues". He had some very good answewrs on some of the questions, albeit much too calculated. I was amazed at how poorly he answered the question about "life beginning at conception.")
I like Obama's answer a lot better than McCain's. McCain said he believes the rights of the unborn begin at conception. That apparently means he is against use of The Pill or IUDs.
Um...since the Pill and IUDs work to PREVENT conception- how do you figure this, exactly?
Those two methods of birth control don't prevent conception, they prevent the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.
Gotcha!

A minister, a priest and a rabbi were discussing when life
begins. "Those of my faith," said the minister, "believe
that life starts when the heart starts to beat."

"We take a bit of a different view," said the priest, "in
that we believe life starts at the moment of conception."

"Well," said the rabbi, "it is our belief that life starts
when the kids move out and the dog dies."

The Nit Picker is wrong...on both counts.

The Pill is meant to stop ovulation, and thus prevent conception.

The IUD is meant to prevent sperm from reaching the egg, and thus prevent conception.

Yes- each also has the added benefit of preventing implantation should conception occur- HOWEVER, the primary goal is to prevent conception.

I must have been texting when they went over this in health class...I completely missed the first part.

No, they prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. That's why many right-wingers are opposed to them.

When used as ongoing contraception, the primary mechanism of action of the IUD is spermicidal/ovicidal. However, post-fertilization mechanisms are believed by some physicians to contribute significantly to their effectiveness,
Combined oral contraceptive pills were developed to prevent ovulation by suppressing the release of gonadotropins. Combined hormonal contraceptives, including COCPs, inhibit follicular development and prevent ovulation as their primary mechanism of action.
Suitguy is not bitter.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Ouch. This one struck a little too close to home in my case. I would like to add to the list, though, "when the last kid to move out stops calling home on a daily basis."

I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

I just got through explaining to the Nit Picker the primary function of such contraceptives.

Need I go over it again with you?

Are you sure it was Rick Warren's CHURCH that sent out the spam? Or some well-meaning church secretary who does what my mother does, and multiposts, crossposts, forwards, and otherwise plays into the hands of every spammer out there by constantly re-sending every bit of glurge they find alarming, without doing a bit of crosschecking?

Rick Warren is on the record as supporting reading of the Harry Potter books, to the extent of promoting them on his website, much to the dismay of this and other anti-intellectual websites:
