It's undoubtedly true that Palin doesn't need a teleprompter, but those remarks were not off the cuff. They were part of a well-written, well-rehearsed, and beautifully-delivered presentation that was memorized or close to it. Ask the other Toastmaster who hangs around here if you don't believe me. An experienced speaker who spends most of the waking hours for two days preceding a run-through working on a speech, then the run-through, then more work on it the next day, then tweaking it right up to the actual presentation is gonna have that speech nailed without the teleprompter.

She had the text typed out on the lectern. I was surprised when I saw her actually holding the page getting ready to turn it, but I guess she had to because that was the only prompt she had.

In my education and training as a speaker, I was taught (and taught others) never to try to deliver a memorized speech. Very few people can pull it off.

I loved Palin's speech, but I have no delusions that she had it memorized or that any part of it was "off the cuff."

Her speech was certainly well rehearsed but not memorized. It is very impressive that she dint lose her cool when the prompter broke.

When Obama doesn't have a prompter he sounds like a third grader doing show and tell.

I didn't see Obama's acceptance speech. Now, I am not nearly as enamored with his speaking ability as it appears almost everybody else is, but the only thing that the prompter going out on him would have changed from what I've seen of him in other venues is that he would have been bound to the lectern. Maybe he stayed at the lectern for his acceptance speech, but his tendency is the roam the platform.

If he's truly as bad without a script as has been alleged, then he is going to need MAJOR coaching before the Presidential debates.
