Can Canada paddle into the top 10
After all the derision of a week ago both in world and Canadian media, Canada is now in 16th place with 15 medals 3 gold 7 silver and 5 bronze. Canada won a silver in platform diving and a gold in show jumping this morning. We still have our standard bearer Adam van Koecerden who is poised to win the K1-500 and 1000 events tomorrow and Saturday. Contenders in Taekwando, some other canoe/kayak events and a possible gift in the mens 4x100 relay because a couple of teams including USA botched baton passes we have a shot.

Re: Can Canada slide into the top 10
I didn't see any "derision in world media." The only place I saw the topic mentioned was on this board.macrae1234 wrote:Spoiler

There was quite a bit of criticism in the Canadian press about the Canadian showing but the U.S. press, as usual, didn't seem to notice.
I'll have to look and see how the Canadian media give the medal rankings. Most world sources go strictly by gold medals won and only use the others to break ties. U.S. media has traditionally ranked by total medals won.
The CBC site lets you sort it either way.

Spoiler
The three Canadian gold medals get them into 16th place in the international rankings while in the U.S. they are are already tied for 12th.

Our columnist pointed this out tonight, that the U.S. outlets like seeing their nation on top, and so does China; hence the different ways of listing.andrewjackson wrote:

I disagree that the choice of listing method is based on what makes each country look good. That's an easy assumption to make and quite a few people seem to want to make some hay with it but it just isn't so. The international community has been listing gold medals for quite a while and the U.S. media has been listing it by total medals in the past several Olympics.Ritterskoop wrote:Our columnist pointed this out tonight, that the U.S. outlets like seeing their nation on top, and so does China; hence the different ways of listing.andrewjackson wrote:

China is continuing to do it the way they have in the past and so is the U.S.

A top ten for Canada is looking unlikely.
They are 17th in the gold medal count and 13th in overall.
They still have competitors alive in the Men's 800m final, three in Canoeing, two in Mountain Biking, two in Diving, and one in Rhythmic Gymnastics. So I guess it can still happen.

My mistake. I thought they had finished 5th but that was just after the compulsory round. So that's one more potential medal.macrae1234 wrote:Don't forget the synchro swimming ladies currently in 5th. To get into the top 10 in golds, Canada needs at least 4 and probably 6 or 7 more gold medals. Or at least 10 more medals to get into the top 10 in the overall. Every single Canadian left would have to medal and most would have to get a gold. That's going to be tough.
