The rehearsal ran a little longer than I expected, so I went dashing off to get to the restaurant on time. I had reserved a function room because of the large number of people. They hadn't requested a deposit, though, and I didn't want them to think I had bailed on them. We were only a few minutes late, and I wasn't even the first of our group into the parking lot. Minor moment of anxiety when I find out the room is on the second floor (I had not visited the place, but it's one of a local chain and I had visited other locations.). My mom doesn't do well with that many stairs. But as I expected, there was an elevator.
There were three tables set up. The young folk sat at one, my family members sat at another, and FSIL's family sat at the third. I approached, said "This ain't right" and immediately sat with FSIL and his family. I already knew those other people.
The dinner itself was quite nice. Good food, good conversation, good company, fun time. GW's goddaughter was a bit upset by the fact that she was by far the youngest one there. We placated her by mentioning a cousin who would be at the hotel with her girl child of similar age. Goddaughter did enjoy being treated as an equal with the older kids, though. ("Kids" here is relative. The next youngest to goddaughter was 22.)
One thing I discovered in the course of the afternoon: FotG had no idea that he was to be best man until he got to the rehearsal. Apparently FSIL "didn't know" either. We'd known it for about a month, when it became likely that FSIL's Army buddy wouldn't be able to make it. I thought BD and he had made the decision and he'd passed the information along to his dad. I guess not. Great, another clueless male in the family. Welcome to the club.
