RIP Genuine Risk

#1 Post by earendel » Tue Aug 19, 2008 8:27 am

The only filly to hit the boards (place in the top three) in all three Triple Crown races, winning the Derby in 1980 (finishing 2nd in both the Preakness and the Belmont), at age 31. She was the oldest living Derby winner; that distinction now goes to Alysheba, the 1987 winner.

Another link to my youth gone.

My favorite horse of all time was Little Current, the 1974 winner of the Preakness and Belmont and the horse that one me five bucks when I picked his name out of a hat with my family and next door neighbors. At the age of 7, that was some serious coin.

Anyway, Little Current hung around and hung around and hung around until 2003, at the ripe old age of 32.

Anybody know off hand who the oldest Triple Crown race winner is now? I'm gonna look now...

It would be Alysheba, who won the Triple Crown in 1987.

I remember the first greyhound that won money for me, Tijuana Small.

Alysheba lost the Belmont. I took a special interest in Alysheba, since his dad (my second favourite horse of all time) lost to Affirmed, who was the last Triple Crown winner in 1978.

Well, Alysheba didn't win the Triple Crown. He won the first two legs of it and then couldn't get it done in the Belmont, I believe.

I just looked on Wikipedia, and there is no death date for 1979 Belmont winner Coastal or 1981 Belmont winner Summing. Doesn't mean they are still allive, but since there are death dates for other horses from that era, there is at least a chance!

D'oh! I always get Alysheba, Alydar and Affirmed confused.

Alysheba lost the Belmont. I took a special interest in Alysheba, since his dad (my second favourite horse of all time) lost to Affirmed, who was the last Triple Crown winner in 1978.
