Obama fights "Celebrity" ad with another

Barack Obama is out to show that two can play the celebrity game with a new ad Monday labeling his Republican opponent John McCain as Washington's biggest celebrity.

The Democratic presidential candidate, vacationing in Hawaii, released an ad, titled "Embrace", that paints McCain as both a regular on the TV talk show circuit and a consummate political insider, chummy with President Bush and lobbyists alike.

Obama's counterads won't be nearly as effective as McCain's ads, because the public knows and accepts that most well known politicians manage to keep themselves in the public eye on talk shows and so forth. It wasn't Obama appearing on Leno or Letterman that led to the McCain ads, it was the mindless adulation that peaked in Berlin.

I wonder a bit about McCain using his "celebrity" ads during the Olympics when most people want positive uplifting messages. At least, he devotes the last half of the commercial to making his points about his energy package in the usual (for commercials) flag waving manner.

The point I get from both candidates' Olympic commercials is that they're for windmills.

What led to the McCain ads are two things. They've got no dirt on Obama, so they attack him for being able to draw a crowd. And they've got no new ideas, so they can't run a positive campaign.

Mindless adulation is in the eye of the detractor. People go to Obama rallies because they want to hear him speak. Not like McCain, who had to be the opening act for Kid Rock in Sturgis so he could be filmed speaking to more than a handful of people.

There's dirt on Obama, which I've heard from a number of sources. The Republicans are keeping it close to the vest right now. All they've done so far is counterpunch, and quite effectively, when Obama thought he was going to have a huge lead afte his European tour. Don't assume that they don't have dirt because they haven't used it yet.

And by the way, when Obama spoke in front of a crowd that was maybe 20% of what David Hasselhoff was able to draw in Berlin, they had two rock bands performing for free beforehand as well as a free bratwurst giveaway. Free food and free music might be enough to get me out to see Obama.

I noticed that, and wondered if they were using the same footage of windmills.

Which makes me think a great idea for elections:

1. Give each candiate the same 25 seconds of film- environment, war, education, whatever.

2. Each candidate provides his/her own soundtrack to the film provided- no video insertions or cuts. The only video addition is the picture of the candidate at the end and the "I apporve this crap" rap.

I think the results would be very telling.

Time will tell. What I have heard is usually couched in generalities but it comes from reliable people. Two specific possibilities are the irregularities in Obama's birth certificate and the Michelle Obama "whitey" speech.

Hillary was hamstrung during the Democratic primaries by the fact that she wouldn't resort to Rovian politics. She didn't blow the whistle on Edwards; she didn't bring up Wright before Super Tuesday when it would have done her the most good (it was Sean Hannity who broke the Wright story after the OH and TX primaries. Instead, any time she tried to question Obama on his background, she caught so much heat from the "outraged" media and DNC types she backed off. The Republicans have already shown they won't back off and they have pretty much removed Obama's ability to claim racism no matter what type of garbage they may trot out in the fall because of all the times he's claimed racism already.

Even though Ithaca is supposed to be such a progressive, enlightened, green community, there's NIMBY opposition to a plan to build one on the western side of the county. Folks are concerned about noise pollution.

The latest ones around here were faced with a ton of dissent from mainly one (but some others too) rather prominent individual in the community. The main complainer owns Melaleuca. I tried to find out why he was against them so that I could understand his point of view. The most I could discover was that he felt it would disrupt the view where they were to be placed.

I am happy to report that as of last week, the new turbines will be built! YAY.
