Thoughts and prayers for SiL

#1 Post by christie1111 » Wed Jul 09, 2008 8:18 am

She was diagnosed with cancer yesterday. I gather it is a form of oral cancer but I am getting details filtered through my Mom who is currently with Brother1111#1. She has all the required risk factors, heavy smoker/drinker.

I know they biopsied a lymph nearby. They are at Yale-NH today which luckily is actually their local hospital.

Damn, I'm sorry. Even with the smoking and the drinking, no one deserves stuff like this. Healing vibes going out to your sister-in-law from NJ.

Report is that it is early. Operable. Lower part of the jaw. Lymph involved.

Chemo/radiation decision depending on what they find in the surgery.

Scheduled for the day my Mom was supposed to go back (7/22). Clearly they are changing flight reservations.

Anyone know if you can get a change without penalty if there is a medical issue? Prolly not since it isn't my mom with the issue.

Of course a jerk I have to work with proceeded to tell me about a relative with oral cancer who had to have his tongue removed and then was so upset he committed suicide.

Uh, thanks for sharing! IDIOT!

There is an actress on "As The World Turns" Colleen Zenk Pinter who has oral cancer. She turned what was happening to her into an educational opportunity.
In 2007 Zenk Pinter was diagnosed with oral cancer. Through a series of four surgeries and brachytherapy radiation, Zenk Pinter's Stage II cancer was treated, and for the time being, she is in compete remission and is cancer free. In October 2007 Zenk Pinter appeared on CBS's 'The Early Show' to publicize the risk factors of oral cancer and to stress early screening. Colleen has partnered with The Oral Cancer Foundation (http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org) to do additional interviews in print and TV media as well as produce a public service TV announcements (PSA) on the importance of early detection. In January 2008 Zenk Pinter's oral cancer was integrated into As the World Turns story line, with her character Barbara Ryan receiving the same diagnosis. This happened as the Oral Cancer Foundation was looking for low cost ways to inform the American Public about the risks from oral cancers. While a difficult role to play having just come out of treatment for the disease herself, she and the producers of ATWT agreed to the story line. In Spring 2008, CBS, the station that her show has appeared on for decades, donated the minutes for her Public Service Announcements on the disease to play, to the tune of about $500,000 in air time nationally on their affiliates.

Thanks PSM.

The lymph on the same side is clearly not a good thing.

Guess we will know more on the 22nd.

Most of my concern is for my niece.
