#4. "Don't Tear Me Down" - STASH (2015)
This duo, I'd assume, is an absolute enigma... with very little about them on the internet. Yet, here they are with my #4 song in the Mecca 100. "Don't Tear Me Down" made the final Mecca CD in the late summer of 2015, probably not long after it was recorded, and it took nearly the entire lifespan of that CD for me to like, and then fall in love with it. The video is pretty cool as well. Some will find the rap girl that had a bit too much coffee to be annoying... but the annoyance works in this one so well. I love it, and don't tear me down for that. Oh, and this is the final time you will hear me talk about the Mecca CD's from 2013-15, making this my favorite song of the well-over 500 songs that appeared on them!
#3. "Gold on the Ceiling" - The Black Keys (2012)
Here is our good friend Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) again, this time collaborating with Ohio duo The Black Keys on what has to be their best song ever. Not a single person, young or old, had anything negative to say about "Gold on the Ceiling" when I featured it on my blog a few years ago. It is a modern tribute to rock of the late 60's and early 70's, and as one critic in the Wiki article aptly described it, a hybrid of "Spirit in the Sky" and "Rock and Roll, Part 2." This turned up as an earworm in the late 2010's, and I can't believe I have never heard this anywhere else other than Mecca and YouTube. This is probably, from a technical standpoint, the best song in this countdown, the only thing keeping it at #3 being the absolute fondness I have developed for the two songs I will reveal here tomorrow...
