The highest ranking CIA officer every cauught spying on behalf of the Soviet Union and, later, Russia, died in federal prison while he was serving life without parole. Ames served in the CIA for 31 years before being arrested in 1994. He is believed to have compromised over 100 CIA operations and provided the information to the Soviets for money to fund a lavish personal lifestyle. Ironically, Sandy Grimes, a fellow CIA agent who first noticed Ames's unusual goings on and helped expose him, died a few month ago as well.
