Oscar-winning documentarian best known for The Sorrow and the Pity, a study of how the Nazi occupation affected life in a small French town, and the Oscar-winning Hotel Terminus, a 4 1/2 hour film on the life of Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie. Ophuls was born in Germany but spent his adult life in France.
