Howard was a multisport phenom at Ohio State University and was drafted to play basketball by the Philadelphia Warriors in 1958.

1960 NL Rookie of the Year with the Dodgers.

To get an idea just how large he was, here's a classic shot taken at the 1969 All Star game (he hit a HR this game). Howard is in the middle and Boog Powell is to his left. Boog is listed at 6-4, 230 lbs. Sal Bando, to his right, is 6-0. Frank is listed as 6-7, but always appears bigger.
