The Aricebo Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico, already damaged, had likely had a fatal blow as the receiver platform (900 tons of it) fell onto the reflector dish. It was, until recently, the largest radio telescope on Earth.
In pop culture, it was used for a fight scene in the James Bond film Goldeneye
The U.S. National Science Foundation had previously announced that it would be closed.
