Lyrically Speaking - 1/31/20

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Jan 30, 2020 10:41 pm

Every Monday since June 2014 I've featured a different song on my blog. The most enduring of the music series I've run on Mondays has been the Dusty Vinyl Archive, where I give exposure to a song I believe has unfairly been buried in an age where there's too much homogeneity between corporate radio playlists of stations that play pre-2000 music. Every time an overplayed song like "Don't Stop Believin'" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit" airs yet again, another great hit song from the past dies. You can fill out a baseball schedule with the 162 DVA posts I have done in the past... and here are 20 of my favorites in this game. How many of these great overshadowed, or just plain lost, 70's, 80's and 90's songs can you pick out?

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. Help me, help me
Cause you know
I'm not that strong
Help me, help me, darling
I've been lonely for too long

2. Do you hear me
Do you care
Do you hear me
Do you care

3. Coming over the airwaves
The man says I'm overdue
Sing along, send some money
Join the chosen few

4. You set my lips on fire
You won the key to my heart
You've got a special way to move me
Can't stop now let's do it again

5. And you lack the one that is devotion
Not always there in your hair in a daze.
Just too mixed up in your own emotions;
Your vanity will always be your greatest thing

6. Baby, it's no good
We're just askin for trouble
I can touch you but I
Don't know how to love you

7. She doesn't know your name
And your heart beats like a subway train
Ooh, it makes you wanna die

8. Lonely sidewalks, silent night
Bring the evening, deep inside
Hold me, darling, touch me now
Let the feeling free tonight

9. You know your voice is a love song
It`s a catcall from the past
There`s no ice in your lover`s walk
You don`t look twice
Cause you move so fast

10. I like black and white
Dreaming in black and white
You like black and white

11. I never had a head for solitare
It`s so unfair
That I`d should have my chance and lose
Feel like I`ve been used

12. All alone tonight, I'm calling out your name
Somewhere deep inside this part of you remains
Images of love take me back in time

13. Feeling neglected, used and rejected
You need a shoulder to lean upon
Maybe you picked him, found your next victim
Don't worry, someone will come along

14. Fat cats, big ass rats
Jumping to the beat
Black, black oil and crack
In a big black limousine

15. If you dont like what you got, why dont you change it?
If your world is all screwed up, then rearrange it

16. If I was you, and you were me
You wanna be winning
If you want something bad
You gotta wanna give your all

17. There's a fire beneath my skin
There's a fever that makes me ill
Got a love, a love that kills
I've got twenty four hours to live

18. It's okay you want to shine
But once you step across that line
No matter where you hide
I'm coming after you

19. Back in the race
I'm movin' in cause I am getting closer
I'm diggin' in
I want it more than anything I've wanted

20. Been six months
She hasn`t shut up once.
I`ve tried to explain,
She`s driving me insane.

There's so many choices here. I could go with a song from my birth year (1982) or I could go with a Chicago or Peter Cetera song, but I'm gonna surprise you & go with:

FIND A WAY-Amy Grant

This was her first "secular" Billboard top 40 hit. It came out one year before her duet with Peter Cetera ("The Next Time I Fall"). It's a much better song than "Baby Baby".

Wow. Was it Super Bowl weekend, or did these "lost" songs scare everyone off?

1. Help me, help me
Cause you know
I'm not that strong
Help me, help me, darling
I've been lonely for too long
Come Back - J Geils Band (Apparently has too much of a disco sound for some people, but I absolutely love this song...)

2. Do you hear me
Do you care
Do you hear me
Do you care
Words - Missing Persons

3. Coming over the airwaves
The man says I'm overdue
Sing along, send some money
Join the chosen few
Jacob's Ladder - Huey Lewis & The News (How odd that two of Huey's three #1's [this and "Stuck With You"] seem to not be among the five or six of the band's songs that still get a lot of airplay)

4. You set my lips on fire
You won the key to my heart
You've got a special way to move me
Can't stop now let's do it again
Instant Replay - Dan Hartman

5. And you lack the one that is devotion
Not always there in your hair in a daze.
Just too mixed up in your own emotions;
Your vanity will always be your greatest thing
Divine Thing - Soup Dragons (Not every early 90's song was Nirvana-ish garbage)

6. Baby, it's no good
We're just askin for trouble
I can touch you but I
Don't know how to love you
Ah! Leah! - Donnie Iris (Yes, two exclamation points in one song... and it deserves them both, believe me.)

7. She doesn't know your name
And your heart beats like a subway train
Ooh, it makes you wanna die
Maria - Blondie (This song was an international hit in 1999.... about everywhere but America. This should have been Blondie's big comeback song... and as far as I'm concerned, it's their very best!)

8. Lonely sidewalks, silent night
Bring the evening, deep inside
Hold me, darling, touch me now
Let the feeling free tonight
Love Is On The Way - Saigon Kick (A truly lost OHW from 1992, and an amazingly good song...)

9. You know your voice is a love song
It`s a catcall from the past
There`s no ice in your lover`s walk
You don`t look twice
Cause you move so fast
The One Thing - INXS (I remember this song from when it first came out... yet it was over two decades later before I found out it was by INXS, who I didn't think was even around in 1983...)

10. I like black and white
Dreaming in black and white
You like black and white
Run Runaway - Slade

11. I never had a head for solitare
It`s so unfair
That I`d should have my chance and lose
Feel like I`ve been used
Just The Way It Is Baby - Rembrandts (This is ten times better than that stupid "Friends" song.... yet it will always be what people remember them for)

12. All alone tonight, I'm calling out your name
Somewhere deep inside this part of you remains
Images of love take me back in time
Where Are You Now - Synch/Jimmy Harnen (Completely and utterly forgotten top 10 hit from 1989. It originally came out two years earlier and joined the second chance hit movement that strangely occurred in 1989)

13. Feeling neglected, used and rejected
You need a shoulder to lean upon
Maybe you picked him, found your next victim
Don't worry, someone will come along
Salt in My Tears - Martin Briley (This is the perfect fuck you song after a breakup, and I don't know how it wasn't a bigger hit...)

14. Fat cats, big ass rats
Jumping to the beat
Black, black oil and crack
In a big black limousine
Shake For The Sheik - Escape Club (This was my very first DVA featured song. Their long forgotten follow up to the one song everyone remembers them for....)

15. If you dont like what you got, why dont you change it?
If your world is all screwed up, then rearrange it
Raise A Little Hell - Trooper

16. If I was you, and you were me
You wanna be winning
If you want something bad
You gotta wanna give your all
On Our Own - Bobby Brown (Shitty sequels had a strange knack for having really good forgotten songs. See: Caddyshack II and Kenny Loggins, or Song #19...)

17. There's a fire beneath my skin
There's a fever that makes me ill
Got a love, a love that kills
I've got twenty four hours to live
Sold Me Down the River - The Alarm

18. It's okay you want to shine
But once you step across that line
No matter where you hide
I'm coming after you
Shakedown - Bob Seger

19. Back in the race
I'm movin' in cause I am getting closer
I'm diggin' in
I want it more than anything I've wanted
Far From Over - Frank Stallone (Other than looking it up on YouTube, or as the occasional background music... I haven't heard this song played since I was a kid)

20. Been six months
She hasn`t shut up once.
I`ve tried to explain,
She`s driving me insane.
Talk To Ya Later - The Tubes (I laughed at Krox's Krox... because I hear "She's A Beauty" all the time, and it's definitely still what everyone remembers them for. I like the less commercially polished "Talk To Ya Later" much better...)

Image Bonus: Show me something you like non-music related that seems to have been lost to the ages.

Slim pickins, due to several absentee IB players. I decided I liked Panic's image better. We need fewer men in Speedos on the beach, so full body swimwear gets him the IBB...

In my case, now that I've seen the answers I can say with confidence that I've never heard of any of these songs. Not a one. --Bob
