I may not be able to lift my arms tomorrow

#1 Post by TheCalvinator24 » Sat May 03, 2008 8:36 am

I joined a gym this week, and I went this morning for the first time. That was the first time I have lifted weights since 1995. I didn't go overboard, but I can already feel my arms quivering.

I was surprised that I was able to bench press more than 100 pounds.

Good Luck with it. By now, the New Year's Resolution crowds have probably gone away.

Don't overdo it, Cal. I applaud you for getting back to the gym and the weights, but don't do too much too soon.

Thanks. I tend not to do anything by half-measures. I paid for 3 years up front.

Take Advil all day and you might not be as sore tomorrow.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Congrats on taking on your health.

Would wrist weights (say that phrase three times fast) help with arm strength while on the elliptical? We've got no room to add a weight area, but I could use some additional work on those muscles, beyond the ski pole back-and-forth.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

I am no expert and I have read that experts say the wrist weights add stress to wrist bones and do damage rather than benefit.

I would increase the tension on the uppper body part of the elliptical to work those muscles. Also be intentional in the motion, rather than just holding on and having your arms go along for the ride, actually push and pull, on purpose, while using those muscles. If you do, you won't be able to do that for very long in the beginning. As you continue to do it, you will have to be more and more intentional.

Saturday evening and yesterday, it was my shoulders that were aching.

This morning, the pecs cried out.

I really mean it when I say I didn't go too hard on Saturday. I just hadn't worked out in 13 years, and my muscles were probably awakened thinking "What does he think he's doing? At his age? Are you kidding me?"
