Whiz Kids Week
Uma Upamaka
St. Charles, MO
14 years old
Uma is a 4-time spelling bee champion and an aspiring pediatrician. On her previous show she had both spelling and medical questions. She spent 5 years studying spelling and says the key is learning other languages and how to pull words apart. Uma is going for $30,000 with her Ask the Audience and +1 lifelines still available. Her +1 is her mom.
$30,000: What is the only country in South America that borders both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean?
A - Ecuador
B - Venezuela
C - Colombia
D - Peru
Uma rules out
B, C and D
but doesn't want to take the risk so she asks the audience.
Ask the Audience results:
A - 69%
B - 6%
C - 6%
D - 19%
Uma trusts the audience.
Answer: C (Colombia)
Uma leaves with $5,000.

One of the worst ATA results ever. I can't imagine why so many people thought Ecuador is on the Caribbean. Did the contestant influence them in some way?

Even without knowing the geography, a little history goes a long way. Panama used to be part of Colombia. --Bob

Uma did suggest that it wasn't Venezuela, Colombia or Peru.

30K: Even I can eliminate Peru. Pretty sure Equador goes too. Pretty sure 50/50 does same elim as I did.
