RIP Gene Cernan

#1 Post by Bob Juch » Mon Jan 16, 2017 3:06 pm

Former astronaut Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, has died at age 82.

NASA announced that Cernan died Monday surrounded by his family. NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs confirmed the death but had no immediate details.

This means that half of the men who have walked on the moon are gone.

Remaining are Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11), Alan Bean (12), David Scott (15), John Young and Charlie Duke (both on Apollo 16), and Harrison Schmitt (17).

It also means that five of the Group 2 astronauts (aka "The Next Nine," the group after the Mercury Seven) are gone. Left from that group are Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, Jim McDivitt, and John Young.

I've always felt a special affinity for John Young. Like me, he's from Orlando and went to Georgia Tech. After he went into space, one of his Tech professors, who had given him a D in mechanical drawing (a requirement at the time) started a petition to change his grade to an A, removing the only blemish on his Tech academic record. Young stopped it because he said he valued the D as an indication of Tech's integrity.
