The Boney 500: Songs 140 and 139

140. MR. SUN, MR. MOON-PAUL REVERE & THE RAIDERS (1969)
Album: Hard 'N' Heavy (With Marshmallow)

A good natured, happy sunshiny kind of song. I liked so many of their singles, but this is my favorite.
Unfortunately you never hear it anymore. To be honest, I wouldn't take a hundred "Indian Reservations"
or "Kicks" for one "Mr. Sun Mr. Moon".

139. SONG OF BERNADETTE-JENNIFER WARNES (1987)
Album: Famous Blue Raincoat

This comes from an album of songs written or co-written by Leonard Cohen, a really good record that just
missed making my Top 150 Album list. Warnes herself co-wrote this (she spent some time at one point as
Cohen's backup singer) and it is a beautifully presented work. The title refers to the young girl, later to be
canonized, who claimed to have had numerous visions of the Virgin Mary. It is used as a springboard to address
the larger theme of returning to a purer state of being.

Album: Hard 'N' Heavy (With Marshmallow)
Because when you think hard and heavy, the name Marshmallow comes to mind.

I always get a kick out of watching clips from the music shows of the 60's. The bands always seem to buy into the lip synch and seem so enthusiastic. Did any viewers really believe these were performed live?

Well, I was 11 at the time, so yeah, some viewers did.

Now I don't think any performance on TV is live.

Yeah, back before the days of MTV, we were happy to get any glimpse of our rock 'n roll heroes...we didn't pay any mind to the fact that the drummer wasn't actually hitting the cymbals, there was an orchestra playing but was nowhere to be found, group members were singing backup without a microphone in sight, etc.

...and these days performance is all about choreography and 37 costume changes, and robots have done the singing in the recording studio, so live performance becomes a bit problematic..

Lots of anaerobic activity, and sweating, yet there is no huffing and puffing in the vocals. hmmmmm.... :?
