RIP Steven Hill

NEW YORK -- Steven Hill, a versatile character actor in theater, films and television who achieved his greatest success late in life as grumpy District Attorney Adam Schiff on TV's long-running "Law & Order," died Tuesday. He was 94.

I remember him as the original IMF team leader, Dan Briggs, in the first season of Mission Impossible.. His end-of-season departure led to the casting of Peter Graves in his iconic role.

His departure was for religious reasons - he was an Orthodox Jew and refused to work from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, which conflicted with the filming of some episodes.

He was great as Adam Schiff. One of the best Law and Order lines was after Hill left the show and McCoy has taken over as DA. He says, "No wonder Adam was so grumpy."
