Today's album entry may come as a bit of a surprise for many.....
124. PIECES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN, & JONES, LTD.-THE MONKEES (1967)
Mike Nesmith shines on this album. In fact, he has more lead vocals than anyone else on this album,
which is probably why I like it so much, as he was my favorite Monkee. But even Davy is tolerable on
this one (don't get me wrong, I liked some of his songs, but too many were aimed at 11 year-old girls
reading their Tiger Beat magazines), with one exception where he goes into full-on sappy Davy mode.
This also has one of their best ever songs, "Pleasant Valley Sunday". I played this quite a lot back
then, and it's still a pleasant nostalgic listen.

I have long been an advocate for the Monkees for the R&R HoF. Mickey had a great pop voice, Mike could write some mean songs and even Davy was tolerable when he wasn't trying to woo the Tiger Beat crowd. And as for not writing their own material - That was the era of the Brill building and people who made their living writing songs for other people. Being the best selling American act of the 60's should mean something.
